Replace CPU? Alibaba Cloud Releases Cloud Data Center Processor CIPU

  

On June 13, at the 2022 Alibaba Cloud Summit, Alibaba Cloud released a special processor CIPU (Cloud infrastructure processing units) for cloud data centers. Alibaba Cloud said that, The special processor designed by CIPU for the new cloud data center will replace the CPU as the processing core of IDC in the cloud era.

In the past ten years, cloud computing technology has gone through two stages of development: the first stage is that distributed and virtualization technologies replaced mainframe, meeting the computing power scale required by enterprises at that time; In the second stage, resource pooling technology emerged, separating computing and storage resources, and then large-scale scheduling and scheduling, providing a very large scale computing and storage resource pool.

The evolution of these two stages promotes the development of cloud computing through software definition and optimization based on the traditional CPU centric architecture.

In recent years, the demands of cloud customers have changed greatly. More and more data intensive computing has been carried out. The demands for low latency and high bandwidth provided by cloud computing have been constantly improved. These demands are difficult to meet through traditional architecture.

Zhang Jianfeng, president of Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said that the new generation of cloud computing should make systematic innovation from the inside of the data center, from the previous CPU centric architecture to the CIPU centric architecture.

Under this new architecture, CIPU accesses physical computing, storage and network resources downward, and quickly cloud and accelerate hardware; Access the Apsara Cloud operating system upward to control millions of Alibaba Cloud servers worldwide.

The data at the meeting showed that the new generation cloud computing architecture based on CIPU and Apsaras showed superior performance in the computing test of core scenarios such as general computing, big data, artificial intelligence, etc. For example, for cloud native, the container startup speed is 350% faster, and 3000 elastic container instances can be pulled up in 6 seconds in the Serverless scenario.  

Zhang Jianfeng believes that the new generation cloud computing system will not only have an impact on the cloud and the data center, but also change the traditional computer terminal form, as well as software application and development interface.

At present, Alibaba Cloud operates 84 zones in 27 regions around the world, has the largest infrastructure in Asia, and has expanded its business to the Middle East and Europe.
