Analysis on selection, installation and use of power supply system equipment

The reliability of the power supply system in the data center is crucial to the entire data center, no matter how superior the performance, powerful the function and high the reliability of the IT equipment we use. Once there is no power support, no matter how good the IT system can work. In the construction of the power supply system, we may often only care about the problems faced by our entire system, while ignoring the problems existing in the equipment selection, installation and use of the power supply system. What are the problems in the actual installation of the power supply system?

1. There are still some wrong ideas and misleading when purchasing and configuring equipment

(1) When determining the performance standard for selecting UPS, the manufacturer misled us and took some of the highest performance indicators of the products advertised by the manufacturer as the standard for our own selection;

(2) Simply determine the advantages and disadvantages by UPS circuit structure;

(3) Neglect the adaptability of UPS to power grid and power pollution;

(4) Neglect the inspection of equipment reliability. You should know that inappropriate improvement of some performance indicators will cost you money and reliability

2. Potential quality problems caused by system design defects

The design is not standardized, the system configuration is not reasonable, and there are many hidden dangers.

(1) All devices are connected in series, forming multiple single path fault points;

(2) The input and output impedances of the connected equipment do not match, and the reliability is reduced or the capacity has to be reduced for use due to mutual influence;

(3) The equipment with large input harmonic current and starting impulse current not only pollutes the power grid, but also causes serious mutual interference within the system;

(4) The power transmission line in the system is too long and the layout is messy, which is easy to cause interference and human accidents;

(5) A large number of circuit breakers are configured in the system. Due to quality problems or unreasonable configuration in terms of capacity and action time, the system sometimes has unknown faults.

3. Lack of quantitative reliability measures

(1) Users, especially operation and maintenance personnel, feel that security and reliability are the most important problems of the current power supply system. However, there is no quantifiable reliability index as the basis for selecting equipment.

(2) Take the UPS product as an example. The reliability index provided by the UPS equipment manufacturer is MTBF, but it is a probability index. For users, this index cannot be measured and verified, so it is ultimately untrustworthy. A common phenomenon is that users can choose highly reliable equipment, but after the actual operation, the failure is frequent. Users want a reliable and quantifiable reliability index.

In any case, we should consider the above issues in the purchase and installation of the power supply system in the data center. The so-called "prepare well" should not plant any seeds that may cause failures in the data center. This can ensure the reliability of the power supply system and improve the ability of the data center to deal with risks.
