Iron Mountain hopes that the data center will be powered by 100% renewable energy

Recently, Iron Mountain announced that its three data centers will be 100% powered by renewable energy (through the power purchase agreement). The company has reached a 25 MW 15 year cooperation agreement with the wind farm recently opened in Linger Mountain, Pennsylvania.

The company said that the agreement not only reduced the impact on the environment, but also reduced operating costs. This also provides long-term stability in electricity prices.

Kevin Hagen, head of Tieshan, said: "One of the primary challenges of our sustainable energy strategy is to solve the traditional energy problem. Our renewable energy plan needs to adopt innovative ways to provide customers with better and more cost-effective solutions, while reducing the impact on climate and the environment.

Mark Kidd, senior vice president and general manager of Tieshan, added: "With the development of our data center business, we have been looking for ways to solve the power problem more effectively, because the largest operating cost of the power data center is renewable energy supply, which can ensure stable prices and effectively control the cost, while purchasing 100% renewable energy to reduce the power consumption of the data center, Tieshan Company and customers can meet the growing demand To provide cost-effective, sustainable and clean power.

Iron Mountain currently operates a data center in Boston, an underground data center facility in Pittsburgh and Kansas City, and is building a data center in Northern Virginia, which will be put into operation in August this year.

Iron Mountain originally planned to use 100% renewable energy in December 2016, and announced to expand the scale of the Pittsburgh data center last October. However, the wind power plant chosen by Iron Mountain to cooperate with failed. It was reported that NJR Clean Energy Investment Company, a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, first opened a wind farm with a capacity of 39.9MW in Linger Mountain at the end of last year, However, in January this year, the facility was shut down due to a fault. The investigation of the cause of the fault of a 320 foot high turbine is still ongoing, but the wind farm is now back in operation.

Although the Trump government has recently taken measures to mitigate climate change legislation and promote coal power generation, this transaction means that Tieshan has joined the camp of several other data center companies that pursue 100% renewable energy, including Google, Amazon, and Switch.
