Teach you how to turn an idle USB stick into a router

Do you have some USB flash drives with small capacity? They are too small for use. It seems that it is a pity to lose them. But now, after a small transformation, we can get a powerful router with our computer, which not only saves money on buying routes, but also can hardly buy this router in the market!

Introduction to DD-WRT

Each router device we usually use has its own operating system OS, which is used to set and manage various functions of the router device. In fact, what we usually call upgrading router firmware is upgrading and refreshing the operating system in the routing device to make the routing device more powerful.

DD-WRT is a Linux operating system, but it is actually a third-party router firmware. Its routing and network management functions are very powerful, and it is widely used in LinksysWRT54G/GS/GL, or other 802.11g wireless routers based on Broadcom reference design. You can refresh the DD-WRT to the supported router devices to make the router more powerful. Similarly, we can let DD-WRT run independently on a computer. As long as the corresponding hardware is provided, the computer can realize the function of router!

Hardware preparation

It is enough to use a small idle USB disk. Of course, this USB disk cannot be used as a router alone. But it can be used as a super compact The server , take it with you and use it with different computers. At the same time, it is necessary to add a network card or a hub to the whole machine.

Installing DD-WRT x86

Now, it is time to "brush" the USB stick by firmware DD-WRT. Generally speaking, there must be hardware equipment to brush firmware. Here, the router firmware needs to be brushed. Generally speaking, the firmware needs to be brushed on the router. But here we are directly refreshing the firmware to the USB flash drive. The capacity of DD-WRT is only about 11MB. Most of the old USB flash drives have about 16MB to 128MB of space, which is absolutely enough!

Here we take a 64MB USB flash disk as an example :

DD-WRT X86 version of "dd-wrt-public-vga.image (hard disk/memory card installation image file)" and "physdiskwrite0.5.1 (router IMG writing tool)", unzip them to the same folder, open the CMD command prompt window, and enter the folder where the program is located. Execute the following command:

"Physicdiskwrite.exe-udd-writ_public_vga. image", the program will automatically detect the hard disk and removable storage devices in the current system, and display the serial numbers and related parameters of all storage devices.

View in detail :

"Informationfor | |. |. PhysicalDrive *" information, to confirm the serial number of the old USB flash disk, where "PhysicalDrive *" is the designated one to display the serial number of the hard disk and USB flash disk device. Generally speaking, if there is only one hard disk on the machine, the serial number of the attached USB stick is "PhysicalDrive1"; If the new machine has two hard disks, the serial number of the old machine's USB stick is "PhysicalDrire2", and so on.

The program prompts "Which disk do you want to write?", that is, it requires to enter the serial number of the target USB flash disk. Be careful not to select the wrong one, or all data in the USB flash disk will be overwritten. Enter the serial number of the USB flash drive, and the screen will prompt you to confirm whether it is correct and whether it is really written. Of course, select Y. After a few seconds, the router firmware will be written to the USB flash drive of the old computer. Finally, the screen will prompt "11534336/11534336bytes written in total", indicating that the writing is successful.

Tips :

The "- u" parameter in the "physdiskwrite.exe-u dd-wrt_public. vga. image" command is mainly used when the target hard disk or U disk is larger than 800MB. If the old disk is smaller than 800MB, or the CF card is used, this parameter can be removed.

Set up router

Connect the USB stick to the computer, plug in the Internet cable for both network cards, start the computer, and boot the system with the USB stick that has just been flashed into DD-WRT. After startup, you can see that the DD-WRT just flushed takes over the system boot and boots into the Linux system. After the system boots, DD-WRT will automatically detect the network environment and hard disk devices, automatically set the network, and start to provide routing services.

Open on PC browser , enter the default IP address "192.168.1.1" of the router in the address bar of the browser, and enter the user name and password. The default user name for logging into the router is "root" and the password is "admin". After login, the default interface is English, which can be adjusted to Chinese. Click "administrator" at the top of the page, enter the page, and set "LanguageSelection" to "ChineseSimplified".

Tips

Here we introduce how to directly play DD-WRT on a USB flash drive. In fact, it can also be copied to CF card, DOM and other storage media. In addition, you can also directly download "DD-WRT

X86 "CD image files can be burned directly without installation. The optical disk image can also be mass produced directly to the USB flash disk, so that a USB flash disk with dual functions of "routing" and storage can be obtained!

Now, it is time to set the ADSL router to access the Internet. The common network access methods may be ADSL dial, fixed IP or dynamic IP. Here, ADSL dial setting is taken as an example, and others can be referred to. Click "Settings/Basic Settings" at the top of the page, select "PPOE" in "Internet Connection Type", and enter the account and password of ADSL dial-up Internet access. In the "Network Settings/Router IP" below, set the address of the local DNS domain name resolution server, and save the settings to start providing the routing function. In the "Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)" below, you can enable the DHCP function.

In addition, many ADSL MODEMs also support WEB management, and their factory default IP address is often "192.168.1.1". It may be that ADSL MODEM conflicts with the router's lP address, which makes it impossible to install and use the router. Therefore, we must change the LAN IP address of the router. In the "Network Settings/Router IP" just now, change the "Local IP Address" to another IP address, such as "192.168.1.254". After the setting takes effect, the LAN IP address of the router will change to "192.168.1.254". After setting the router, it will be accessed through IP connection.

Routing

On other computers, set the gateway as the IP address of the host router, set DNS or use DHCP, and you can access the Internet freely. The U-disk router has very powerful functions. It can support 3322ORG DDNS and peanut shell DDNS. It can optimize bandwidth by setting QoS, speed limit, and number of connections. It also supports PPTP client and PPTP server settings of VPN, provides VPN access, and can easily manage various network applications through configuration, such as completely blocking BT, electric donkey, Thunderbolt, etc.
