Farewell, weapon

Farewell, weapon

Original text: Hemingway Translator: Ancient is

In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked  across the river and  the plain to the mountains. In the bed of the river there  were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear  and swiftly moving and blue in the channels. Troops went by the house and  down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees. The  trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we  saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred  by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare  and white except for the leaves.[20141013]

At the end of the summer that year, we lived in a house in the country where mountains could be seen across the river and plain. Under the sun, the pebbles and gravels in the riverbed are white and dry, and the river is blue, clear and fast. The army passed by the road under the house, raising dust and falling leaves. Even the tree trunk and the leaves that fell early that year were covered with dust. As the army marched along the road, the dust was flying, and the wind caused the leaves to shake and fall. After the soldiers left, the road was bare and dazzling, except for the fallen leaves.

[Note]

one looked  across It means to overlook, but here we should look... to see alone, across the river and the plain.

two  pebbles and boulders I translated it as pebble and gravel. Lin Xizhi's version translated it as pebble and big round stone. Boulders means gravel. According to the encyclopedia, gravel "refers to natural particles with a particle size of 2~60mm and no edges and corners formed by long-term transportation of weathered rocks by water flow." Pebble is also long-term transportation by water flow. It is different from gravel in particle size, so it is speculated that it should be gravel.

three Dry is translated as dry crack, which is to consider the stone surface

four The  trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early  that year  Especially this sentence, Lin Xizhi translated it as "leaves fell early that year" I wonder if El Nino came early , contact the context to know the“  the leaves fell early  that year ”It should be the leaves that fell early that year, Leaves falling first.

5.“ the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred  by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare  and white except for the leaves. ”I have thought for a long time about the translation of this sentence, We watched the troops driving on the road, and the dust was flying, and the leaves fell one after another due to the breeze. After the soldiers drove, the road was white and empty, leaving only a leaf After reading this passage carefully, the author actually wants to express the huge march. The wind blows and leaves fall off when the troops walk, and the road is bare and shiny after the march. So I translated it as:“ As the army marched along the road, the dust was flying, and the wind caused the leaves to shake and fall. After the soldiers left, the road was bare and dazzling, except for the fallen leaves. ”I added "dazzling" here, but I can't combine this sentence. The original is that the road is bare and bright except for fallen leaves.

The plain was rich with crops; there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare. There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery. In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming. [20141014]

The plain is covered with crops and many orchards, while the mountains behind the plain are bare brown. There is a war in the mountains. At night, we can see the flash of artillery. The night is like summer lightning, but the night is cool, not like the coming rainstorm.
[Note]

Understanding of the last sentence: the light of artillery is the same as that of lightning, except that it is muggy before the coming rainstorm after lightning in summer, which is not as cool as that of lightning now. So the foreigner's thinking is just different from mine. If I write it, it must be like this: The night is full of gunfire, like summer lightning, but I'm not afraid, because death is a cool summer night, which can provide people with a carefree sleep. (Cao Cao)

Sometimes in the dark we heard the troops marching under the window  and guns going past pulled by motor-tractors. There was much traffic at night  and many mules on the roads with boxes of ammunition on each side of their  pack-saddles and gray motor trucks that carried men, and other trucks with  loads  covered  with  canvas  that  moved  slower  in  the  traffic.  There  were  big  guns too that passed in the day drawn by tractors, the long barrels of the guns  covered with green branches and green leafy branches and vines laid over the  tractors. To the north we could look across a valley and see a forest of chestnut  trees  and  behind  it  another  mountain  on  this  side  of  the  river.  There  was  fighting for that mountain too, but it was not successful, and in the fall when the  rains came the leaves all fell from the chestnut trees and the branches were  bare  and  the  trunks  black with  rain.  The  vineyards  were  thin  and  bare-branched  too  and  all  the  country  wet  and  brown and  dead  with  the  autumn. There were mists over the river and clouds on the mountain and the  trucks splashed mud on the road and the troops were muddy and wet in their  capes;  their  rifles  were  wet  and  under  their  capes  the  two  leather  cartridge-boxes  on  the  front  of  the  belts,  gray  leather  boxes  heavy  with  the  packs of clips of thin, long 6.5 mm. cartridges, bulged forward under the capes  so  that  the  men,  passing  on  the  road,  marched  as  though  they  were  six  months gone with child.[20141015]

Sometimes in the dark, we can hear the sound of troops passing under the window and tractors dragging artillery. The traffic is frequent at night. On the road, there are many donkeys carrying ammunition boxes, gray trucks transporting soldiers, and a kind of truck, loaded with things covered with canvas, moving slowly in the ranks. In the daytime, there are also cannons towed by tractors. The long cannons are covered with green branches, and the tractor itself is also covered with green branches and vines. A chestnut forest can be seen across the valley northward. There is another high mountain behind the forest on this side of the river, which is also fighting, and it is hard to distinguish between them. When the autumn rain came, chestnut leaves fell one after another, leaving only bare branches and dark trunks beaten by rain, even the vineyards. In autumn, all the villages were yellow, damp and lifeless. Mist rose from the river, and dark clouds were lingering in the mountains. The truck was splashing mud on the road. The soldiers' shawls were wet and muddy, and the rifles were also wet. Two leather bullet boxes were hung under their shawls. Inside the gray leather boxes were rows of slender 6.5 mm bullets, which bulged and protruded on the road, like a pregnant woman who was pregnant with a child of six months.

[Adapted version]

Sometimes in the dark, we can hear the sound of troops passing under the window and tractors dragging artillery. Traffic is frequent at night: there are many donkeys carrying ammunition boxes on the road, ash trucks transporting soldiers, and a truck that moves slowly in the ranks and is covered with canvas. Of course, there are cannons towed by tractors in the daytime, but their long barrels are covered with green branches, and even tractors are covered with green branches and vines. Across the valley to the north, there is a chestnut forest. Behind the forest, there is another high mountain on the side of the river. There is also a war. When the autumn rain comes, chestnut leaves fall one after another, leaving only bare branches and dark trunks washed by rain, even vineyards. In autumn, all villages are damp and grayish brown, lifeless. Mist rose from the river, dark clouds swirled in the mountains, trucks splashed with flying mud and drove quickly. The soldiers' shawls were wet, thick and full of mud. The rifles they were carrying were also damp. Two leather bullet boxes were hung under their shawls. In the bullet boxes, there were rows of slender bullets with a diameter of 6.5 mm. They bulged at the waist. The road was like a pregnant woman with a child of six months.

[Note]

In the translation of this relatively long paragraph, I realized a problem: the expression habit of English is different from that of Chinese. If I translate it according to the original text, I still can't read it. So I made some adjustments in the rewriting version and added several adverbs to make it read in line with my reading habits.

1. Big guns Gun means guns in addition to guns. It can be seen from the context that big guns are big guns.

two but it was not successful I think my translation of this sentence is quite good. In connection with the above, I am also fighting in another mountain. According to the literal translation, "but not successful", a successful war means a division of victory and defeat. If not successful, it should be "hard to tell".

three The  vineyards  were  thin  and  I have omitted the translation here, As mentioned above, the chestnut trees are bare. If we follow the original expression habits here, they are still bare, like Ge You, so I translate it as "the vineyard is so bleak".

4. The word "cape" means "shawl", but I always feel a bit awkward, so I especially found the "cape" in World War II Military uniforms structure diagram I still haven't found a good word to describe it. For the time being, only the shawl can be used. In the future, if there is a good word, change it.

five the  packs of clips  Pack has the meaning of package, group, and packing. Clip has a different meaning, and the meaning of clamping is too big for me. After careful consideration, I think what he said may be rows of bullets. You know, not all anti Japanese drama machine gunners have special ammunition delivery buddies, and the bullets are not all connected in rows. I think that should be the meaning.

There  were  small  gray  motor  cars  that  passed  going  very  fast;  usually there was an officer on the seat with the driver and more officers in the back seat.  They  splashed  more  mud  than  the  camions  even  and  if  one  of  the officers  in  the  back  was  very  small  and  sitting  between  two  generals,  he himself so small that you could not see his face but only the top of his cap and his narrow back, and if the car went especially fast it was probably the King. He lived in Udine and came out in this way nearly every day to see how things were going, and things went very badly.

At the start of the winter came the permanent rain and with the rain came the cholera. But it was checked and in the end only seven thousand died of it in the army. [20141016]

On the road, there are gray cars speeding by, which are even more arrogant than military trucks. Usually, an officer sits next to the driver, and the others sit in the back. If you can see a small man sitting between two generals in the back, only his cape and narrow back are exposed, so small that you can't even see his face, and the car is driving very fast, then this small man is probably the king. He lives in Udiney, Every day I go to this road to inspect the progress of the war, but the war situation is getting worse (but the war situation is getting very bad).

At the beginning of winter, it began to rain continuously, followed by cholera. By the time cholera was brought under control, more than 7000 people had died in the army.

[Note]

one They  splashed  more  mud  than  the  camions  even  The literal meaning of this sentence is "a car is a drag, even worse than a military truck". In connection with the "King" behind me, I translated it as the arrogant and domineering driving of the car, and made adjustments in the expression habits. There is no reason, but I read it well.

2. As a noun, general actually means general.

3. and things went very bad. I translated it as "just the war situation is getting worse", and the English translation should be "but things went more bad", so I made an extension.

four So far, the first chapter of Farewell to Arms has been translated, and it can be read as a whole.

The next year there were many victories. The mountain that was beyond  the valley and the hillside where the chestnut forest grew was captured and  there  were  victories  beyond  the  plain  on  the  plateau  to  the  south  and  we  crossed the river in August and lived in a house in Gorizia that had a fountain  and many thick shady trees in a walled garden and a wistaria vine purple on  the side of the house. Now the fighting was in the next mountains beyond and  was not a mile away. The town was very nice and our house was very fine. The  river ran behind us and the town had been captured very handsomely but the  mountains  beyond  it  could  not  be  taken  and  I  was  very  glad  the  Austrians  seemed to want to come back to the town some time, if the war should end,   because they did  not bombard it to destroy it but only a little in a military way.   People lived on in it and there were hospitals and cafes  and artillery up side  streets and two bawdy houses, one for troops and one for officers, and with the  end of the summer,  the cool nights, the fighting in the mountains beyond the  town, the shell-marked iron of the railway bridge, the smashed tunnel by the  river where the fighting had been, the trees around the square and the long  avenue of trees that led to the square; these with there being girls in the town,   the King passing in his motor car, sometimes now seeing his face and little  long  necked  body  and  gray  beard  like  a  goat’s  chin  tuft;  all  these  with  the  sudden interiors of houses that had lost a wall through shelling,  with plaster  and rubble in their gardens and sometimes in the street, and the whole thing  going well on the Carso made the fall very different from the last fall when we  had been in the country. The war was changed too.[20141017]

The following year saw several victories. The mountain behind the valley and the hillside planted with chestnut trees have been taken down, and several victories have also been won in the plateau area southward across the plain. We crossed the river in August and stationed at Gorizia In a house with a fountain, the house has a walled garden, planted with some shade loving trees, and planted with a wisteria on the side, full of purple. Now the battle is not near. There are several mountains away from us. The town is beautiful, the residence is comfortable, and a river flows quietly behind the house. Although there are several mountains behind the town that have not been occupied, the battle of occupying the town is very beautiful. I'm glad that those Austrians seemed to want to come back after the war. They didn't bomb the whole town in a destructive way and only took some minor military actions. There are still people living in the town as usual. There are hospitals, cafes, and two brothels on the street where artillery troops are stationed. One serves soldiers, and the other serves officers. Several cold nights after the end of summer, in the mountains behind the town, there have been several battles on the bullet riddled railway bridge, and near the river washed tunnel. (After the war) The square surrounded by trees and the green avenue leading to the square were full of girls from the town. The king passed by by car. From time to time, he could see his face, slender body and gray goatee. Sometimes, shells burst through the walls and destroyed one or two walls of the house. The garden was filled with dust and gravel, which occasionally spread on the street, but Karst Most things in the region are getting better, so that last autumn the situation in the countryside was quite different, and the war situation has also changed.

1. Damn it, who the fuck will tell me about Hemingway“ Iceberg Theory " , I must hit him in the face, this part, and You should read the sentence "and and" at one sitting to suffocate you.

2.a wistaria vine purple on the side of the house:“wistaria ”Wisteria, "vine ”As a noun, there are vines, vines and vines. Considering that wistaria is already a noun, it should take the verb "form vines" to mean "purple ”Purple, damn, English is really wordy. Let's speak Chinese, right? Wisteria already includes purple. They don't. Wisteria is a noun, and purple is another noun colour Can There is also an adjective, which is translated as "wisteria forms into rattan" Purplish ”It's like a tongue twister Purple ”。

three People lived on in it and there were hospitals and cafes  and artillery up side  Streets and two bawdy houses: The expression habit of this paragraph is more interesting. According to the common understanding, there should be hospitals and cafes, and the street and two brothels occupied by artillery. However, it should also be with two bawdy houses. The level is poor, and it is incomprehensible. With broad thinking ability, it translates into "there are two brothels on the street where artillery is stationed ”, and I feel good about myself, and I turned over Lin Xizhi's version, and this guy really came here like this“ As usual in the town People live, there are hospitals and coffee shops, there are artillery teams stationed on the street, and there are two brothels ”, hospitals, cafes, brothels, tell me what the relationship between the street and them is.

four The fighting in the mountains beyond the town, the shell marked iron of the railway bridge, the smoothed tunnel by the river where the fighting had been: it took nearly an hour to translate this paragraph, because of the difference in level, and the self feeling that it expressed Hemingway's original intention, first look at Lin Xizhi's version; The war took place again in the mountains outside the town. There is a bullet riddled railway bridge here, and there is a tunnel blown up by the river - there was a war here before—— Pay attention to the end of the original sentence: "the fighting had been ”This is the past perfect tense, which is already completed, while Lin Xijin is taking place. This is the most fundamental difference between the two kinds of translation. My understanding of where is that several battles have been fought in these places, that is, "the fighting had been fought in the mountains beyond the town, the shell-marked iron of the railway bridge, the smashed tunnel by the river ”, because I feel that several places should be parallel, otherwise why does this happen for no reason, Fuck right or wrong.

5. sometimes now:

6. Going well on the Carso: search Gorizia Not far away, I may have translated this sentence incorrectly. Lin Xizhi may be right. According to my translation, this sentence should be going well in the Carso. Lin Xizhi's translation is in the karst front line, but according to the previous understanding: "The house was suddenly blown up by one or two walls, and dust and gravel were scattered on the street ”But on the whole, things are getting better and logical. Doubt!

The forest of oak trees on the mountain beyond the town was gone. The  forest had been green in the summer when we had come into the town but now  there were the stumps and the broken trunks and the ground torn up, and one  day at the end of the fall when I was out where the oak forest had been I saw a  cloud  coming  over the  mountain.  It  came  very  fast  and  the  sun  went  a  dull  yellow and then everything was gray and the sky was covered and the cloud  came on down the mountain and suddenly we were in it and it was snow. The  snow slanted across the  wind, the bare ground was covered, the stumps of  trees projected, there was snow on the guns and there were paths in the snow  going back to the latrines behind trenches.[20141018]
When we entered the town in early summer, there was a verdant oak forest. Now the oak forest on the mountain outside the town has been destroyed by the war, and the land is fragmented, leaving only some stumps and destroyed trunks. I went out here one day at the end of autumn. At that time, the clouds were converging rapidly towards the top of the mountain. The sun was yellow, and everything was gray, even the sky was covered. The clouds were falling lower and lower, and suddenly we found ourselves in the snow. Snowflakes were flying obliquely in the wind, and the bare land was covered with snow from time to time. Only protruding tree stumps could be seen, and the cannon group was covered with snow. When we hurried back to the toilet behind the trench, we had already stepped on several snow paths in the snow.

1. At the beginning, looking at the paragraphs to be translated today, I felt that first, they were relatively short, and second, most of the words were known. Today's task was relatively easy. Who would expect that it would take a lot of trouble to combine this paragraph and read it smoothly in connection with the context

2. At the beginning of this paragraph, the word order has been adjusted. The above is "the war situation is getting better", and the following is "the oak forest disappears" at the beginning. I always feel that this is not coherent, so I have adjusted the word order.

three I saw a  cloud  coming  over the  mountain.  It  came  very  fast  and  the  sun  went  a  dull  yellow and then everything was gray and the sky was covered and the cloud  came on down the mountain and suddenly we were in it and it was snow : I think the translation of this paragraph is quite brilliant. I will adjust the structure to meet the reading habits, such as“ I saw a cloud  coming  over the  mountain.  It  came  very  fast  ”Combined into "I see clouds are converging towards the top of the mountain" and“ suddenly we were in it and it was snow ”Suddenly, we are in the snow.

Later,  below  in  the  town,  I  watched  the  snow  falling,  looking  out  of  the  window of the bawdy house, the house for officers, where I sat with a friend  and two glasses drinking a bottle of Asti, and, looking out at the snow falling  slowly  and  heavily,  we  knew  it  was  all  over  for  that  year.  Up  the  river  the  mountains had not been taken; none  of the mountains beyond the river had  been taken. That was all left for next year. My friend saw the priest from our  mess going by in the street, walking carefully in the slush, and pounded on the  window to attract his attention. The priest looked up. He saw us and smiled.  My friend motioned for him to come in. The priest shook his head and went on.  That night in the mess after the spaghetti course, which every one ate very  quickly and seriously, lifting the spaghetti on the fork until the loose strands  hung clear then lowering it into the mouth, or else using a continuous lift and  sucking  into  the  mouth,  helping  ourselves  to  wine  from  the  grass-covered  gallon flask; it swung in a metal cradle and you pulled the neck of the flask  down with the forefinger and  the wine, clear red, tannic and lovely, poured out  into  the  glass  held  with  the  same  hand;  after  this  course,  the  captain  commenced picking on the priest.[20141019]

Later, I returned to the town at the foot of the mountain and sat with my friends in the brothel serving the officer. Two glasses and one bottle Asti Looking out the window of the brothel, the snow is still falling, heavy and slow. We know that the year is over. Although the mountains on the upper reaches of the river have not yet been captured, and the mountains on the opposite side of the river have not yet been occupied, all these will be reserved for next year. When the friend saw the priest in the dining hall was carefully stepping on the snow and mud hitting the street, he knocked on the window to attract his attention. The priest looked up, saw that it was us, smiled at us, his friend signaled him to come in, the priest shook his head and walked away. That night, when eating spaghetti in the dining hall, everyone was eager and meticulous. They either picked up a few pieces of spaghetti and slowly put them down into their mouths, or they held them up and sucked them with their mouths, and then covered them with hay gallon Take the wine from the bottle and put it on the metal shelf. Use your forefinger to pull off the bottleneck, and you can easily make it clear and red Tannins Pour your wine into the glass. After dinner, the captain began to make fun of the priest.

1. The translation was very smooth, except for the section of eating noodles, which is difficult to understand, everything else can be said to be superb

two which every one ate very  According to the literal understanding, everyone eats quickly and seriously (seriously), and is rather awkward. From the following, they are not very good at eating noodles, so I translate it as "eating quickly and meticulously".

three lifting the spaghetti on the fork until the loose strands  hung clear then lowering it into the mouth, or else using a continuous lift and  Sucking into the mouth: This paragraph is very difficult to understand. I have no experience in eating this kind of spaghetti myself, so I can only guess, "lift" The sentence "loose strands hung clear" is very difficult to understand. Loose strands have a certain part. Hung means hang hanging. Clear is clear, but it should be complete here. I started to fill my brain. This is a person who is not very good at eating noodles. It's more interesting for us to eat thin noodles like the Monkey King. The Lord here must fork into the bowl with a fork, and the forked noodles will be lifted to a height and slowly lowered. Another way is to use this method when you can't eat more than a few pieces of noodles, and then the fork noodles don't go up. It's also pitiful to hold them up and suck them with your mouth lying on the top. You have to learn to use chopsticks.

four swing : Google's translation has the meaning of placing and hanging. Personally, it is appropriate to place wine on a metal rack.

5. with the same hand.

6. Pick on ”Two words, it is estimated that English can not be translated.

The priest was young and blushed easily and wore a uniform like the rest  of us but with a cross in dark red velvet above the left breast pocket of his gray  tunic. The captain spoke pidgin Italian for my doubtful benefit, in order that I  might understand perfectly, that nothing should be lost.
“Priest to-day with girls,” the captain said looking at the  priest and at me.
The priest smiled and blushed and shook his head. This captain baited him
often.
“Not true?” asked the captain. “To-day I see priest with girls.”
“No,” said the priest. The other officers were amused at the baiting.
“Priest  not  with  girls,”  went  on  the  captain.  “Priest  never  with  girls,”  he  explained to me. He took my glass and filled it, looking at my eyes all the time,   but not losing sight of the priest.
“Priest every night five against one.” Every one at the table laughed. “You  understand?  Priest  every  night  five  against  one.”  He  made  a  gesture  and  laughed loudly. The priest accepted it as a joke.
“The Pope wants the Austrians to win the war,” the major said. “He loves  Franz Joseph. That’s where the money comes from. I am an atheist.”
“Did you ever read the ‘Black Pig’?” asked the lieutenant. “I will get you a  copy. It was that which shook my faith.”
“It is a filthy and vile book,” said the priest. “You do not really like it.”
“It is very valuable,” said the lieutenant. “It tells  you about those priests.  You will like it,” he said to me. I smiled at the priest and he smiled back across  the candle-light. “Don’t you read it,” he said.
“I will get it for you,” said the lieutenant.
“All thinking men are atheists,” the major said. “I do not believe in the Free  Masons however.”
“I  believe  in  the  Free  Masons,”  the  lieutenant  said.  “It  is  a  noble  organization.” Some one came in and as the door opened I could see the snow  falling.[20141020]
The priest is young and shy. He wears the same military uniform as us, but in his gray Short sacrificial robe A cross sewn with dark red velvet was pinned to the left chest pocket. In order to take care of me, the captain made me fully understand that I would not miss anything wonderful. He looked at the priest in vague Italian and said to me, "Father today... today, playing with girls."
The priest smiled and shook his head. His face had turned red. The captain often teased him.
"Don't you understand?" the captain asked, "Today... today I saw the priest playing with girls."
"No," said the priest. Other officers have been amused by the bait.
"The priest doesn't play with girls." The captain continued: "The priest never plays with girls." He explained to me, put on my glasses and looked at me. He squinted at the priest: "The priest plays five games every night." Everyone at the table laughed.
"Do you understand? The priest moves five times every night." He made a gesture and burst into laughter. The priest can only treat it as a joke.
"The Pope wants the Austrians to win this war," said the major. "He likes Franz-Joseph híd His money came from him. I'm an atheist "
"Have you read the book" Black Pigs "?" The lieutenant asked, "I can give you one, because it has shaken my faith."
"It's a dirty and dirty book," said the priest. "You won't like it."
"No, it's quite meaningful," said the lieutenant. "It's about telling you what these priests do. You must like it." The lieutenant said to me. I smiled at the priest. Through the candle light, the priest also smiled at me: "Don't read that book." The priest said.
"I can get you a copy," said the lieutenant.
"All thoughtful men should be atheists," said the major. "But I don't believe in freemasonry."
"I believe Freemasonry ”The lieutenant said, "This is a noble organization." When someone pushed the door and entered, I saw that the snow was still falling.

1. Finally, I translated the dialogue. I made some slight adjustments to the expression of the dialogue, which is generally in line with the original text, not completely following the order of the original text.

“There will be no more offensive now that the snow has come,” I said.
“Certainly not,” said the major. “You should go on leave. You should go to  Rome, Naples, Sicily–“
“He should visit Amalfi,” said the lieutenant. “I will write you cards to my  family in Amalfi. They will love you like a son.”
“He should go to Palermo.”
“He ought to go to Capri.”
“I would like you to see Abruzzi and visit my family at Capracotta,” said the  priest.
“Listen to him talk about the Abruzzi. There’s more snow there than here.  He  doesn’t  want  to  see  peasants.  Let  him  go  to  centres  of  culture  and  civilization.”
“He should have fine girls. I will give you the addresses of places in Naples.  Beautiful young girls–accompanied by their mothers. Ha! Ha! Ha!” The captain  spread his hand open, the thumb up and fingers outspread as when you make  shadow pictures. There was a shadow from his hand on the wall. He spoke  again in pidgin Italian. “You go away like this,” he pointed to the thumb, “and  come back like this,” he touched the little finger. Every one laughed.
“Look,” said the captain. He spread the hand again. Again the candle-light  made its shadows on the wall. He started with the upright thumb and named in  their order the thumb and four fingers, “soto -tenente (the thumb), tenente (first  finger),  capitano  (next  finger),  maggiore  (next  to  the  little  finger),  and  tenentecolonello (the little finger). You go away soto -tenente! You come back  soto-colonello!” They all laughed. The captain was having a great success with  finger  games.  He  looked  at  the  priest  and  shouted,  “Every  night  priest   five  against one!” They all laughed again.
“You must go on leave at once,” the major said.
“I would like to go with you and show you things,” the lieutenant said.
“When you come back bring a phonograph.”
“Bring good opera disks.”
“Bring Caruso.”
“Don’t bring Caruso. He bellows.”
“Don’t you wish you could bellow like him?”
“He bellows. I say he bellows!”
“I  would  like  you  to  go  to  Abruzzi,”  the  priest  said.  The  others  were  shouting. “There is good hunting. You would like the people and though it is  cold it is clear and dry. You could stay with my family. My father is a famous  hunter.”
“Come on,” said the captain. “We go whorehouse before it shuts.”
“Good-night,” I said to the priest.
“Good-night,” he said. [20141021]
"Once it snows, there will be no more attacks" I said
"Of course," said the major, "you can apply for leave and go Rome Naples sicily Play "
"He should be there Amalfi ”The lieutenant said, "I can write to Amalfi's parents. They will like you as their own son."
"He should go Palermo 。”
"He should go Capri 。”
"I think you should go and see Abruzzo , stop by my Capracota's parents, "said the priest.
"Listen, even Abruzzi has come out. The snow there is bigger than this. He doesn't want to see the farmers. Go to the big city."
"He should go to play with girls. I give you the address of Naples, and all the young and beautiful girls are accompanied by Mommy. Ha ha ha!" The captain opened his hands, thumbs up, and his hands appeared on the wall. The stretched fingers seemed to be doing shadow painting. He said again in vague Italian: "When you go there, it's like this." He pointed to his thumb: "When you come back, it's like this." He touched his little finger. Everyone laughed.
"Look," said the captain. Open your hand again, and the candlelight reflects his hand on the wall again. Starting with his thumbs up, he named each finger one by one: "Lieutenant (thumb), Lieutenant (index finger), Captain (middle finger), Major (ring finger), Lieutenant (little finger). When you went there, you were 'Lieutenant', and when you came back, you were 'Lieutenant'!" They all laughed. The captain's finger game is wonderful. Suddenly, he stared at the priest again and shouted, "Father fucks five every night!" Another roar of laughter.
"You should start at once," said the major.
"I wish I could go with you and be your guide," said the lieutenant
"Bring a gramophone when you come back"
"Get some more good opera records"
"Take it Caruso Of
"No, Caruso will yell"
"Would you like to sing like him?"
"Don't beat me up!"
"I still want you to go to Abruzzi," said the priest. Others are still shouting. "It's suitable for hunting and the people are nice. Although it's a little cold, it's cool and dry. You can stay at my home. My father is a famous hunter."
"Let's go," said the captain. "If you don't go, the brothel will be closed."
"Good night," I said to the priest.
Good night

1. The translation of Chapter II is over. At present, the mood is stable. Today's translation is very interesting

1.1:let  him  go  to  centres  of  culture  and  civilization: Let him go to the center of culture and civilization. It seems that this sentence is too formal for dialogue.

two soto -tenente (the thumb), tenente (first  finger),  capitano  (next  finger),  maggiore  (next  to  the  little  finger),  and  TENENTECOLONELLO (the little finger): Hemingway used Italian in this paragraph about finger games. Of course, at the beginning, I foolishly didn't find a translation. Later, I turned to the version of Lin Xizhi and knew it was Italian. I thanked him for the first time.

three He bellows. I say he bellows This dialogue is caused by not listening to Caruso's record.

four You would like the people:. Here, I would like to paraphrase more in line with the habit as: people are also good.

When I came back to the front we still lived in that town. There were many  more guns in the country around and the spring had come. The fields were  green and there were small green shoots on the vines, the trees along the road  had small leaves and a breeze came from the sea. I saw the town with the hill  and  the old  castle  above  it  in  a  cup  in  the hills  with  the mountains  beyond,  brown  mountains  with  a  little  green  on  their  slopes.  In  the  town  there  were  more  guns,  there  were  some  new  hospitals,  you  met  British  men  and  sometimes women, on  the street, and a few more houses had been hit by shell  fire. It was warm and like the spring and I walked down the alleyway of trees,   warmed from the sun on the wall, and found we still lived in the same house  and that it all looked the same as when I had left it. The door was open, there  was a soldier sitting on a bench outside in the sun, an ambulance was waiting  by the side door and inside the door, as I went in, there was the smell of marble  floors and hospital. It was all as I had left it except that now it was spring. I  looked in the door of the big room and saw the major sitting at his desk, the  window open and the sunlight coming into the room. He did not see me and I  did not know whether to go in and report or go upstairs first and clean up. I  decided to go on upstairs. [20141023]

When we returned to the front, we were still stationed in the town. In the nearby countryside, some cannons were added. Spring has come, the fields have turned green, the vines have grown green buds, the roadside trees have also grown some small leaves, the sea breeze is blowing, and the town built against the mountain and the old castle on the top of the mountain are surrounded by the mountains like a water cup. Even the scorched hillside has turned green. There are more cannons in the town than in the countryside, and there are also some new hospitals. You can meet British soldiers and sometimes British women on the street. There are more houses destroyed by gunfire than before. The weather is warm as spring, I wander in the alley under the tree, and the sunshine on the wall shines back on me warmly. We still live in the original house, which has not changed much since I left. The door is open. A soldier sits on a bench in front of the door to bask in the sun. An ambulance is parked at the side door. As soon as I step into the door, I smell the marble floor and the hospital. Except for the spring days, everything is the same as when I left. I looked into the door of a large house. The major was sitting at his desk. The window was open, and the sun shone into the house. He didn't see me. I didn't know whether to go in and report or go upstairs to clean up first. After thinking, I decided to go upstairs first.

1. The mood began to be unstable yesterday. I thought, "Damn, what's the use of translation? Are you better than others? There are so many translations of novels. Why do you compete with yourself? I know it's the low tide. It seems that I am doing something better now than before. It's my turn to do it once every ten days. It used to be done once every three or four days.". Today, it is stable. Other people's translation is their own. I have the right to learn English.

two I saw the town with the hill  And the old castle above it in a cup in the hills with the mountains beyond:, It's just that I don't think the translation is good. It's just that the translation is smooth.

The room I shared with the lieutenant Rinaldi looked out on the courtyard.  The  window  was  open,  my  bed  was  made  up  with  blankets  and  my  things  hung on the wall, the gas mask in an oblong tin can, the steel helmet on the  same peg. At the foot of the bed was my flat trunk, and my winter boots, the  leather shiny with oil, were on the trunk. My Austrian sniper’s rifle with its blued  octagon barrel and the lovely dark walnut, cheek-fitted, schutzen stock, hung  over the two beds. The telescope that fitted it was, I remembered, locked in the  trunk. The lieutenant, Rinaldi, lay asleep on the other bed. He woke when he  heard me in the room and sat up.[20141024]

The room I shared with Lieutenant Renaldi faces the courtyard. The window was open, my bed was covered with blankets, things were hung on the wall, the gas mask was placed in a rectangular tin can, and the helmet was still hung on the nails. My flat suitcase was at the foot of the bed, on which were my polished winter boots. Between the two beds, there was my Austrian sniper rifle with a bluish octagonal barrel and a beautiful black walnut butt. It was suitable for face to face shooting. The binoculars used with the sniper rifle were locked in the trunk. Lieutenant Rainaldi was sleeping in another bed at this time. He woke up when he heard my voice in the room and sat on the bed.

[Adapted Version]

The room I shared with Lieutenant Renaldi faces the courtyard. At this time, the window is open, my bed is covered with blankets, and other objects are hung on the wall: the gas mask is hung in the white iron jar on the wall, and the steel helmet is hung on the nails on the wall. At the foot of the bed, there was a flat suitcase with polished winter boots on it. Between the two beds, there was my Austrian sniper rifle with a bluish octagonal barrel and a beautiful black walnut butt. This gun was suitable for face to face shooting, and its matching telescope was locked in the trunk. Lieutenant Renaldi was sleeping in another bed at this time, woke up by my noise in the room, and got up and sat up.

1. For the same question, it seems that it is not difficult to translate, but the most difficult to combine. This paragraph about the arrangement of the description is poorly translated.

two Cheek fitted: suitable for veneer, a method of using sniper rifles.

three Schutzen stock. These two words are not reflected in the translation. I think it may be the problem of the English version I have.

“Ciaou!” he said. “What kind of time did you have?”
“Magnificent.”
We shook hands and he put his arm around my neck and kissed me.
“Oughf,” I said.
“You’re dirty,” he said. “You ought to wash. Where did you go and what did  you do? Tell me everything at once.”
“I went everywhere. Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples, Villa San Giovanni,   Messina, Taormina–“
“You talk like a time-table. Did you have any beautiful adventures?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“Milano, Firenze, Roma, Napoli–“
“That’s enough. Tell me really what was the best.”
“In Milano.”
“That  was  because  it  was  first. Where  did  you  meet  her?  In  the  Cova?  Where did you go? How did you feel? Tell me everything at once. Did you stay  all night?”
“Yes.”
“That’s nothing. Here now we have beautiful girls. New girls never been to  the front before.”
“Wonderful.”
“You don’t believe me? We will go now this afternoon and see. And in the  town we have beautiful English girls. I am now in love with Miss Barkley. I will  take you to call. I will probably marry Miss Barkley.”
“I have to get washed and report. Doesn’t anybody work now?”
“Since you are gone  we have nothing but frostbites, chilblains, jaundice,   gonorrhea,  self-inflicted  wounds,  pneumonia  and  hard  and  soft  chancres.   Every week some one gets wounded by rock fragments. There are a few real  wounded. Next week the war starts again. Perhaps it start again. They say so.  Do you think I would do right to marry Miss Barkley–after the war of course?”
“Absolutely,” I said and poured the basin full of water.
“To-night you will tell me everything,” said Rinaldi. “Now I must go back to  sleep to be fresh and beautiful for Miss Barkley.”
I  took  off my  tunic  and  shirt  and  washed  in  the  cold  water in  the  basin.   While  I  rubbed  myself  with  a  towel  I  looked  around  the  room  and  out  the  window  and  at  Rinaldi  lying  with  his  eyes  closed  on  the  bed.  He  was  good-looking,  was  my  age,  and  he  came  from  Amalfi.  He  loved  being  a  surgeon and we were great friends. While I was looking at him he opened his  eyes.
“Have you any money?”
“Yes.”
“Loan me fifty lire.”[20141025]
"How are you?" he said
"Pretty good"
We shook hands, and he put his arm around my neck and touched my face[ Italy has the courtesy of meeting two men after a long separation ]。
"Okay," I said
"You have a smell," he said. "It's time to wash. Then tell me immediately what you have been there and done."
"I've been everywhere. Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples, San Giovanni, Messina, Taormina –"
"You seem to be reciting the timetable. Have you ever had an affair?"
"Of course"
"Where?"
"Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples –"
"Enough, say the best"
"In Milan"
"That's because Milan is the first stop. Where did you meet the girl? Was it in Kova? Where did you go? How did you feel? Tell me, all at once. Did you stay together all night?"
"Of course"
"That's nothing. We have a new batch of beautiful girls here. Girls have never had a bud."
"Great"
"Don't you believe it? We can go and have a look this afternoon. There are also some beautiful English girls in the town. I'm in love with Miss Barclay now. I can take you to say hello. I think I might marry her."
"I have to do some washing first and then make a report. Is anyone still working?"
"You didn't have any serious illness after you left. It was all frostbite, chilblain, jaundice, gonorrhea, self inflicted minor trauma, pneumonia and some hard or soft Chancre Every week, people are always injured by rubble. Of course, there are some real wounded. There will be another war next week, and they all say so. Maybe it has already started. Do you think I should marry Miss Barclay? Of course, I'm talking about the war. "
"Of course," I said as I poured water into the basin.
"You have to tell me everything at night," Reinaldi said. "Now I have to sleep back, stay active, and go to see Barclays in the best condition."
I took off my coat and shirt and washed them with cold water in the washbasin. While I was scrubbing with a towel, I looked around the room, looked out of the window, and looked at Renaldi who was lying in bed with his eyes closed. He is the same age as me. He comes from Amalfi. He is very beautiful. He loves military medicine. We are very good friends. When I was looking at him, he opened his eyes.
"Do you still have money?"
"Yes"
"Lend me fifty lira"

1. I am in a happy mood and tired of mundane affairs. I could have translated it for a short time. It's too late to see the time. It's important to stop, stay interested and continue.

two Did you have any beautiful adventures.

three New girls never been to  The front before: The new girls have never been to the front line before. This sentence should be that a group of new girls have come to the brothel, and they have not been killed or fought.

I dried my hands and took out my pocket -book from the inside of my tunic  hanging on the wall. Rinaldi took the note, folded it without rising from the bed  and slid it in his breeches pocket. He smiled, “I must make on Miss Barkley the  impression of a man of sufficient wealth. You are my great and good friend and  financial protector.”
“Go to hell,” I said.
That night at the mess I sat next to the priest and he was disappointed and  suddenly hurt that I had not gone to the Abruzzi. He had written to his father  that I was coming and they had made preparations. I myself felt as badly as he  did and could not understand why I had not gone. It was what I had wanted to  do and I tried to explain how one thing had led to another and finally he saw it  and understood that I had really wanted to go and it was almost all right. I had  drunk much wine and afterward coffee and Strega and I explained, winefully,   how we did not do the things we wanted to do; we never did such things.[20141028]
I dried my hands and took out my wallet from the pocket of my coat hanging on the wall. Renaldi didn't get up from bed, took the money, folded it and stuffed it into his pants pocket. He smiled and said, "I have to give Barclays the impression of a rich man. You are my god of wealth. That's interesting."
"That's damn" I said
That night in the dining hall, I sat next to the priest. He was disappointed and sad that I didn't go to Abruzzo. He had written to his father that I would go, and they had made many preparations. I'm as sad as he is. I can't think why I didn't go at that time. At first, I wanted to go, but one thing after another, I tried to explain. Finally, he saw and understood that I really intended to go, and finally he was relieved. I drank a lot of white wine, and then drank a lot of coffee and a kind of orange alcohol. I explained drunkenly that we didn't do what we wanted to do, and we never did such things.

We two were talking while the others argued. I had wanted to go to Abruzzi.  I had gone to no place where the roads were frozen and hard as iron, where it  was clear cold and dry and the snow was dry and powdery and hare-tracks in  the snow and the peasants  took off their hats and called you Lord and there  was good hunting. I had gone to no such place but to the smoke of cafe and  nights when the room whirled and you needed to look at the wall to make it  stop, nights in bed, drunk, when you knew that that was  all there was, and the  strange excitement of waking and not knowing who it was with you, and the  world  all  unreal  in  the  dark  and  so  exciting  that  you  must  resume  again  unknowing and not caring in the night, sure that this was all and all and all and  not caring. Suddenly to care very much and to sleep to wake with it sometimes  morning and all that had been there gone and everything sharp and hard and  clear and sometimes a dispute about the cost. Sometimes still pleasant and  fond  and  warm  and breakfast  and  lunch. Sometimes  all  niceness  gone  and  glad to get out on the street but always another day starting and then another  night. I tried to tell about the night and the difference between the night and the  day and how the night was better unless the day was very clean and cold and I  could not tell it; as I cannot tell it now. But if you have had it you know. He ha d  not had it but he understood that I had really wanted to go to the Abruzzi but  had not gone and we were still friends, with many tastes alike, but with the  difference between us. He had always known what I did not know and what,   when I learned it, I was  always able to forget. But I did not know that then,   although I learned it later. In the meantime we were all at the mess, the meal  was  finished,  and  the  argument  went  on.  We  two  stopped  talking  and  the  captain shouted, “Priest not happy. Priest not happy without girls.”
“I am happy,” said the priest.
“Priest not happy. Priest wants Austrians to win the war,” the captain said.
The others listened. The priest shook his head.
“No,” he said.
“Priest wants us never to attack. Don’t you want us never to atta ck?”
“No. If there is a war I suppose we must attack.”
“Must attack. Shall attack!”
The priest nodded.
“Leave him alone,” the major said. “He’s all right.”
“He can’t do anything about it anyway,” the captain said. We all got up and  left the table.[20141101]
The canteen was noisy when we were talking. I planned to go to Abruzzo. When the road was not as hard as iron, it was a good place for hunting. It was cold and dry. The snow was dry and powdery. The snow was full of rabbit tracks. Farmers saw you take off their hats and call you Lord. But I didn't go. I spent my time in a smoke filled cafe. At night, the room whirled around. I couldn't stop without staring at the wall. When you are drunk, you lie in bed and feel that this is life. When you wake up without knowing who you are sleeping with, you feel inexplicably excited. In the dark, the world is empty but people are so excited. So you pretend to be ignorant and indifferent to everything every night, so that this is everything, everything, nothing. Sometimes, I suddenly become very alert and wake up from my sleep with such a mood. But when everything disappears in the morning and the eyes are full of clear, sharp and difficult realities, you will even make a big noise about such small things as consumption. Sometimes a little happy, like all this, warm mood after breakfast and lunch, sometimes all the troubles are gone, you are happy to go to the street, and the days just pass by. I tried to tell the priest the difference between day and night. If the day was cool and cold, it would be better. Otherwise, nothing was better than night. But I couldn't, just as I can't tell him now. If you have such experience, you will know. Unfortunately, he did not. But he has already understood that I really wanted to go to Abruzzo. Although we did not succeed, we are still friends. We have many same tastes, but also different. He always understands what I don't understand I always forget. I learned about this later. After dinner, we were all in the dining hall. The argument still didn't stop. The priest and I stopped talking. The captain started shouting again: "The priest is not happy. The priest is not happy without a girl."
"I'm happy," said the priest.
"The priest is not happy. The priest wants the Austrians to win the war," said the captain. Others listened attentively.
The priest shook his head: "That's not true."
"The priest wants us not to attack. Do you want us not to attack all the time?"
"No. This is war. I support the attack."
"Must attack. Must attack"
The priest nodded.
"Give him a break," said the major. "He's not bad."
"But he can't do anything," said the captain.
We got up and left the table.

1. The translation of this paragraph is too difficult, which almost makes me want to give up. I read it at least 30 times before I reluctantly translated it smoothly. It is basically a delusion to want to be elegant and precise. For my third rate level, I realized for the first time that translation is not so easy. I should not only refer to the original text, but also conform to the Chinese expression habits, and also want to have some literary grace. Shit, I'm on a pirate boat.

four .

The battery in the next garden woke me in the morning and I saw the sun  coming through the window and got out of the bed. I went to the window and  looked out. The gravel paths were moist and the grass was wet with dew. The  battery  fired  twice  and  the  air  came  each  time  like  a  blow  and  shook  the  window and made the front of my pajamas flap. I could not see the guns but  they were evidently firing directly over us. It was a nuisance to have them there  but it was a comfort that they were no bigger. As I looked out at the garden I  heard a motor truck starting on the road. I dressed, went downstairs, had some  coffee in the kitchen and went out to the garage[20141102]

In the morning, I was awakened by the sound of the cannon in the next garden. I saw the sun shining through the window, so I got up and walked to the window to look out. The gravel road in the garden was wet, and even the grass was full of dew. The cannon fired two rounds in succession, and the air wave of each round shook the window, and even the front of my pajamas was lifted. Although I can't see the cannon, it is obvious that the cannon is directly above our heads, so close to each other, which is very annoying. Fortunately, the caliber of the cannon is not very large. As I looked out of the garden, I heard the sound of a truck moving along the road. I got dressed, went downstairs, made some coffee in the kitchen, and walked to the garage.

Ten  cars  were  lined  up  side  by  side  under  the  long  shed.  They  were  top-heavy, blunt-nosed ambulances, painted gray and built like moving-vans.  The mechanics were working on one out in the yard. Three others were up in  the mountains at dressing stations.
“Do they ever shell that battery?” Tasked one of the mechanics.
“No, Signor Tenente. It is protected by the little hill.”
“How’s everything?”
“Not so bad. This machine is no good but the others march.” He stopped
working and smiled. “Were you on permission?”
“Yes.”
He wiped his hands on his jumper and grinned. “You have a good time?”
The others all grinned too.
“Fine,” I said. “What’s the matter with this machine?”
“It’s no good. One thing after another.”
“What’s the matter now?”
“New rings.”[20141103]
There are ten cars parked side by side under the long shed, all of which are high center of gravity, round headed ambulances, gray paint, and shaped like moving trucks. The pilots are repairing one car parked outside the hospital, and three cars are parked in the ambulance station on the mountain.
"Has the enemy ever fired on the battery?" I asked one of the pilots who was working
"No, Mr. Lieutenant. It's covered by hills."
"What's going on here?"
"It's OK. I can drive anything except this car." He stopped his work and smiled. "Did you come back on vacation?"
"Hmm"
He wiped his hands with his pullover and grinned: "How was your game?" The other pilots all responded with the same smile.
"Not bad," I said. "What's wrong with this car?"
"It's broken, either this or that"
"What's the problem now?"
"The piston ring must be replaced"
At this time, the engine of the car has been removed, and parts are scattered on the workbench. I let them continue to repair this ugly car, and go into the shed to check the rest of the cars.

After consulting, how to set the top of an article? The built-in function of setting the top is that there is a characteristic article on it, which is ugly. What is required is that there is "set the top" after the title, and then when writing other blog posts, this article is always at the top.
