MIIT: Realize 5G lightweight coverage in cities above county level in 2025

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China released the Notice on Promoting the Evolution of 5G Lightweight (RedCap) Technology and Application Innovation Development on the 17th, proposing the development goal: by 2025, cities above the county level will achieve the coverage of 5G lightweight.

According to the Notice, 5G lightweight (RedCap, short for Reduced Capability) technology is an important foundation for 5G to realize the interconnection of people, computers and things, and will play an active role in building new infrastructure of the Internet of Things, enabling the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries, and promoting the deep integration of the digital economy and the real economy.

The Notice proposes the development goal: by 2025, the comprehensive capacity of the 5G lightweight industry will be significantly improved, new products and models will continue to emerge, and the integrated application scale will be scaled up, and the security capability will be enhanced simultaneously.

In terms of steady development of technology industry, 5G lightweight standard will continue to evolve by 2025; To form a series of 5G lightweight high-quality products and create a complete industrial system; The cost of key industrial links such as 5G lightweight chips, modules and terminals has been continuously reduced, and more than 100 terminal products have been produced.

In terms of application scale, by 2025, cities above county level will achieve 5G lightweight coverage; The application scenarios in industries, energy, logistics, Internet of Vehicles, public security, smart cities and other fields are more abundant; Form a batch of replicable and promotable solutions, and create more than 5 5G lightweight application fields with millions of connections.

The Notice requires that the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group should play its role as a platform, continue to promote the development of specifications, technical testing and other related work, accelerate the maturity of 5G lightweight industry, and promote 5G lightweight to meet commercial conditions.
