Adequate sleep is an important guarantee for the healthy growth of children. However, compared with the situation of urban children in 2004 and 2016, the research group of "Research on Children's Lifestyle" of China Youth Research Center found that the overall sleep quality showed a downward trend.

Lack of sleep among primary and secondary school students is very common

Sun Hongyan, director of the Children's Research Institute of China Youth Research Center and head of the research group of "Children's Lifestyle Research", introduced to the reporter of Life Times that in 2016, the Institute conducted a lifestyle survey of students from grade four to grade two in primary schools in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Yunnan, Shaanxi and Liaoning.

The Management Standards for Compulsory Education Schools issued by the Ministry of Education clearly requires that families and schools should cooperate to ensure that primary school students have 10 hours of sleep every day and junior high school students have 9 hours every day. However, this survey found that compared with 2004, the sleeping time of urban children in 2016 was reduced, especially for primary school students. The data shows that the number of urban primary school students who get enough sleep for 10 hours on the study day decreased by 11.7%; Those who slept for 10 hours on weekends decreased by 13.8%. The number of urban junior high school students who slept for 9 hours on study days was roughly the same in 2016 and 2004, and the number of those who could sleep for 9 hours on weekends decreased by 16.2%.

Internet access and playing games increased significantly

The investigation and analysis of the research group found that the first two reasons for insufficient sleep of primary and secondary school students were more homework and slower homework writing; Some children also have sleep disorders, such as inability to sleep and dreaminess. Compared with 2004, it is found that the proportion of insufficient sleep caused by surfing the Internet has increased from 2.8% to 13.6%, and the proportion of insufficient sleep caused by playing video games has increased from 4.1% to 10.7%. This phenomenon deserves the attention of parents and schools.

Sun Hongyan said that primary and secondary school students are in a critical period of growth and development, and long-term lack of sleep affects physical and mental health. First, growth hormone is secreted vigorously in sleep, and insufficient sleep will have adverse effects on height, development, etc. Second, the child's long-term lack of sleep, reduced immunity and resistance, will give the virus a chance. Third, lack of sleep affects the nervous system, resulting in a decline in children's memory, lack of concentration, affecting learning efficiency and falling into a vicious circle.

Family, school and children work together

It is very important to develop a healthy lifestyle since childhood, which needs the attention of family, school and children themselves.

Sun Hongyan believes that the primary task of family education is life education. It is the responsibility of every parent to cultivate children to have a healthy lifestyle. Parents should pay special attention to their own health literacy and lifestyle, and develop a healthy lifestyle with their children. In terms of improving children's sleep quality, on the one hand, parents should set an example, reasonably arrange their work and rest time, do not watch TV or play games for a long time at night, and create a good sleep environment; On the other hand, parents should pay full attention to their children's sleep and cultivate healthy habits. For example, if it is found that children often cannot finish their homework, we should analyze the reasons together to improve efficiency. We should not blindly ask children to sacrifice sleep time to do homework.

Schools should incorporate healthy lifestyles into education, with special emphasis on students' physical and mental health. Teachers should abandon the behavior of neglecting students' health for the sake of achievement, integrate the health concept into classroom teaching, recess activities and extracurricular practice, run through all stages of students' growth, and imperceptibly make children aware of the importance of healthy diet, scientific work and rest, etc. to the body.

Children should learn to balance the relationship between study, entertainment and sleep, and arrange their time reasonably. They can not surf the Internet and play games without restraint in winter and summer vacation. (Reporter Bao Jie)
