Peanuts, coins, batteries, buttons, bottle caps, antennas... If these are "killers", do you believe? Harbin Children's Hospital recently received a 2-year-old girl who took the button battery by mistake for 16 hours. Since 2017, this hospital has received more than 30 cases of such trachea and esophagus foreign bodies.

There is a plate in the digestive endoscopy room of Harbin Children's Hospital, which collects all kinds of foreign objects taken from the trachea and esophagus of small patients in the past two years, including coins, nails, thumbnails, clothes zippers, batteries, etc. On March 28, the First Department of General Surgery of the hospital received a 2-year-old girl who had misused the button battery for 16 hours. With the cooperation of the general surgery department, the anesthesia department, the digestive endoscopy room and other departments of the hospital, the button battery was successfully taken out through gastroscopy. At present, the child has recovered and left hospital.

Meng Fanping, director of the digestive endoscopy room of the hospital, said that during the operation, the stomach mucosa of the child was congested and eroded in many places, and a button shaped metal object was found in the gastric antrum, which was intact without damage or serious damage to the stomach mucosa. If the battery is not sent to the hospital in time, once the battery shell is completely corroded, the lye inside will cause stomach perforation and other serious problems.

According to Gao Peng, a doctor of the first department of general surgery in the hospital, foreign bodies in the digestive tract are common among children aged 2 to 6 years due to their curiosity about the world and their parents' negligence, and the consequences are different depending on the objects swallowed by mistake. Minor cases may be discharged 24 to 48 hours after taking the drug by mistake, and severe cases may cause intestinal obstruction or even perforation, which requires emergency surgery.

The doctor reminded parents that they should pay special attention to the daily care of children. Once children swallow foreign bodies by mistake, they should seek medical advice in time to avoid adverse consequences caused by delayed diagnosis and treatment.
