With regard to the indicator of total lubricant, five products show three levels. The total lubricant amount of three brands of condoms, such as Beilile, Jesband and Durex, is higher, followed by Double One, and Okamoto is the lowest.

Can condoms really increase lubrication? How different are the lubrication effects of different condoms?

In January 2015, Consumer Report immediately sent four brands of ultra-thin condoms, including Okamoto, Durex, Jesborne and Beilile, and thread products of Shuangyi. Among them, there are three levels of five products for the indicator of total lubricant. The total lubricant amount of three brands of condoms, such as Beilile, Jesband and Durex, is higher, followed by Double One, and Okamoto is the lowest.

In contrast, the total amount of lubricants for three brands of condoms, such as Beilile, Jesborne and Durex, is nearly 5 times that of Okamoto.

There is a big difference in "lubrication"

"Lubrication" is not only a propaganda point for many condom manufacturers, but also a pleasant experience for many consumers. In our previous survey of 160 netizens, 60% of consumers favor this effect.

However, the current Chinese standard GB7544-2009 Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Natural Latex Rubber (13785, 200.00, 1.47%) Condoms only lists the determination method for the total lubricant content of condoms, and does not specify the range of added amount.

In this regard, Deng Yizhi, Secretary General of the Latex Products Sub Technical Committee of the National Rubber Standards Committee, who participated in the formulation of the national standard, said that there should not be too many lubricants, which would easily cause slippage. Therefore, the content is more controlled by the merchants.

Which lubricant is more between different products?

This time, we selected three mainstream brands of condoms in the market, Okamoto, Durex and Jasbon, as well as the popular domestic brand Beilile in e-commerce and Shuangyi condoms distributed free of charge by the Family Planning Office.

The test results show that the total amount of lubricants for these five products shows three levels. Among them, the total amount of lubricants of three brands of condoms, Beilile, Jasbon and Durex, is relatively high, about 550mg/condom, 369mg/condom in the middle of the double ranking, while the content of Okamoto is the lowest, only 112mg/condom. Our reporter opened the five condoms and observed that Okamoto's lubricant content was significantly less than that of other brands. To this end, the reporter contacted the relevant person in charge of Okamoto's general agent Shenzhen Wanshengtang Industrial Co., Ltd., but the other party did not reply.

"The industry generally has a default volume, and the national planned products have provisions for this indicator, and the silicone oil volume is 300 ± 50mg/piece. The internal and external products of condoms of general enterprises will be agreed in the product contract, such as the silicone oil volume of export products is usually more than 500mg/piece, and the silicone oil volume of domestic products is usually about 250mg/piece." Tu Yanling, Secretary General of Latex Branch of China Rubber Industry Association, told our reporter.

She added that the amount of silicone oil added is actually related to the product personalization and customer requirements, and the amount of silicone oil will also involve the cost of the product.

In this regard, Hu Zhiqiang, the general manager of Guilin Hengbao Health Products Co., Ltd., the manufacturer of Beilile, told this magazine that the total amount of lubricants should be about 400 mg (square package) according to the international standard. However, a person in charge of the technical R&D department of Guangzhou Shuangyi Latex Products Co., Ltd. said that the amount of lubricant would also be limited by the capacity of a single package. They suggest that consumers should select the products from the factory three months later when purchasing, so that the lubricant can penetrate evenly.

Due to the great individual differences in sexual life experience, consumers who need lubrication may refer to the test results of this magazine for purchase. Ma Xiaonian, vice president of the Chinese Society of Sexuality, suggested that it was unnecessary to use additional lubricants unless women were particularly dry.

Are additives safe?

As a product in close contact with the human body, the health and safety of condoms are concerned by consumers.

This time, according to GB15979-2002 Hygienic Standards for Disposable Hygienic Products, we also tested the hygiene indicators of five brands of condoms. The test results show that the microbial indicators of all products are qualified. (As shown in Figure 3)

However, many consumers are still worried about whether other additives will have an impact on the human body.

"As a Class II medical device product, condoms are regulated by the state, and the raw and auxiliary materials used must be non-toxic and harmless to the human body. Every new product produced by condom enterprises must go through the strict approval procedures of the relevant national departments such as project initiation and acceptance before entering the market. Therefore, the listed products are qualified (except for fake and inferior products)." Tu Yanling explained.

According to our reporter, mineral oil lubricants will accelerate the aging and failure of rubber condoms, while silicone oil and water-based lubricants used in most products on the market can avoid this problem. The water-based lubricant is also easy to clean. However, the relevant responsible persons of Durex and Shuangyi told reporters that generally, the lubrication time of silicone oil based lubricant will be longer.

Deng Yizhi reminded that for natural latex rubber condoms, the more recently produced products, the better the quality stability. Because rubber products will age with time, even if stored in dark in the south, they will also be affected by high temperature. It is better not to choose products that expire soon.
