Chongqing University was founded in 1929, and proposed the vision of building a "complete Hongshen University". By the 1940s, it had developed into a comprehensive university with complete disciplines of arts, science, business and forensic medicine.After the adjustment of the national departments in 1952, it became a multidisciplinary university focusing on engineering.After the reform and opening up, the university has carried out comprehensive recovery, adjustment and reform and construction, becoming a university with engineering as the main task and multidisciplinary coordinated development.Original in 2000Chongqing Jianzhu University 、Chongqing College of ArchitectureIt was merged with Chongqing University to form a new Chongqing University.[209]

In the summer of the 18th year of the Republic of China (1929), the "Chongqing University Promotion Association" was established.In August of the same year, the founding conference of Chongqing University Preparatory Committee was held, at which the Declaration on the Establishment of Chongqing University Preparatory Committee was issued.On October 12 of the same year, Chongqing University officially opened in Caiyuanba Yangjia Garden. At the beginning of its establishment, Chongqing University only set up liberal arts and science preparatory classes.[4-6]
In the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933), all the students of the school moved to the new campus in Shapingba.In the autumn of the same year, the school added an agricultural college and completed the three colleges.[7]
At the end of May in the 24th year of the Republic of China (1935), Chongqing University was approved as a provincial university and changed to "Sichuan Provincial Chongqing University".In the same year, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Technology was merged into Chongqing University.In the same year, the School of Arts and Agriculture was merged into Sichuan University.[8]
In September of the 26th year of the Republic of China (1937), the National Central University moved westward to Chongqing, and Chongqing University opened on November 1.[9-10]
In the spring of the 27th year of the Republic of China (1938), the teachers and students of the National Shandong University were transferred to the National Central University, and the books, instruments, and machinery were temporarily handed over to the National Central Library, the National Central University, and the National Central Industrial Vocational School.[11]
On September 18, the 28th year of the Republic of China (1939), the fourth meeting of the first session of the National Political Consultative Conference was held in the School of Science. Jiang Jieshi attended the meeting and delivered a speech.[12]
In July of the 30th year of the Republic of China (1941), serious conflicts between students and the authorities occurred many times because of the problem of selecting a new president.
On March 5, the 31st year of the Republic of China (1942), the school resumed;On September 5 of the same year, Chiang Kai shek orderedChen LifuDisband Chongqing University;In December of the same year, the university was approved as a national university, directly under the Ministry of Education.[13]Counter-Japanese WarTeachers and students of Chongqing University actively participated in national salvation activities.[151]
In the 35th year of the Republic of China (1946), the National Central University was restored to Nanjing, and the National Shandong University was restored to Qingdao. Some teachers and students of the Central University stayed in Chongqing, the campus and some equipment were incorporated into the National Chongqing University, and the National Central Vocational College continued to stay in Chongqing to run schools.[14-15]
In the 36th year of the Republic of China (1947), Shaci Hospital officially became an affiliated hospital of a major medical college.[16]
In 1948, it began to recruit graduate students.[17]
In November 1949, Chongqing was liberated, and New China took over the National Chongqing University, which was later renamed Chongqing University.[18]
In September 1951, with the approval of the Ministry of Fuel Industry of the Central People's Government, the "Southwest Petroleum Industry College" was officially established, which cooperates with Chongqing University in running schools.[19]
In 1952, in order to support the development of national higher education, the five colleges of literature, science, commerce, law and medicine, as well as the civil engineering department, chemical engineering department and radio department of engineering college were transferred out, creating and supporting more than ten domestic colleges and universities.[20]
In 1953, the Department of Telecommunications was adjusted to Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications.[21]
In 1954, the major of petroleum and natural gas drilling in the mining department of the university was adjusted to Beijing Petroleum Institute.
In 1955, the Department of Geology was transferred to Chengdu Institute of Geology.
In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the university became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.[23]
In July 1996, the inter ministerial coordination group meeting of the "211 Project" of the State Council identified the university as one of the universities to be constructed during the "Ninth Five Year Plan" period.[175]
In May 1998, the National Planning and Development Commission approved the Feasibility Study Report of the "211 Project" of Chongqing University, and agreed the total investment of the "211 Project" during the "Ninth Five Year Plan" period, marking that the "211 Project" construction of the university has entered the stage of project approval and implementation from the stage of careful preparation.
In October 1952, the national colleges and departments were adjusted, and 10 civil architecture departments of 7 colleges and universities, including Chongqing University, Southwest Industrial College, North Sichuan University, South Sichuan Industrial College, Chengdu Art College, Traffic College, and Trade College, were merged to form Chongqing Civil Architecture College.
In 1996, the Ministry of Construction, Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality jointly established Chongqing Jianzhu University.[27-29]

In March 1974, the Capital Construction Engineering School of the Chinese People's Liberation Army was founded and later renamed the First Technical School of the Capital Construction Engineering Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.
In July 1983, it was reorganized into Chongqing Construction Engineering School, directly under the Ministry of Construction.
In September 1984, it was changed to Chongqing Architectural College and was under the leadership of China State Construction Engineering Corporation.
In 1997, the school was identified as the national model key construction college of higher engineering.[30-31]
Consolidated development
In April 2000, the former Chongqing University, Chongqing Jianzhu University and Chongqing College of Architecture merged to form a new Chongqing University.[32]
In February 2006, the school accepted the entrustment of Hanban to jointly carry out the actual construction of Confucius Institute with Badong Municipal Bureau;[36]In September of the same year, the school participated in theCollege of Urban Science and Technology, Chongqing University(Independent College)。[37]
In 2008, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with the Chongqing Municipal People's Government to continue to focus on co building Chongqing University.
In November 2010, the university, together with Beijing University of Technology and other nine universities, launched the establishment of an excellent talent training cooperation alliance.[40]
In June 2011, the university was approved by the Ministry of Education as the second batch of excellent engineer education and training colleges;[41]In the same month, led the establishment ofChongqing University Alliance。[42]
In November 2012, the school was selected into the first batch of outstanding legal talent education and training bases.[43]
In January 2013, the university was selected into the second batch of national undergraduate innovation and entrepreneurship training programs;[44]In the same year, the university was listed by the Ministry of Education as one of the first batch of universities to study in China.[45]

Chongqing University Huxi Campus
Huxi Campus of Chongqing University is located in the western suburb of Chongqing University Town.It is about 20 kilometers away from Campus A, Shapingba Street, Shapingba District, 30 minutes by car.The campus is a shallow hilly landform with a wide view, bordering Geleshan National Forest Park in the east and Jinyun Mountain National Forest Park in the west.In addition, Huxi River meanders along its southwest boundary.The total area of Huxi Campus is 244.67 hectares, of which 175.2 hectares are for education, and the remaining 69.47 hectares are for faculty accommodation and school development.The construction project of the campus has been officially launched since the end of 2004, strictly following the principle of overall planning and phased implementation.According to the plan, the proposed construction area of the campus will reach 1.55 million square meters, which is expected to accommodate the learning and living needs of 30000 students.The completed construction area of the campus has reached 600000 square meters, and more than 17000 students have settled in.At present, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Arts, the School of Literature and Journalism, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, the School of Physics and the School of Software Engineering have successfully moved to Huxi Campus.[211]
