Ten years of the Cultural Revolution
During the ten years of the "Cultural Revolution", the national higher education was severely damaged.From 1966 to 1969, East China Normal University did not enroll students for four consecutive years. In 1970, it resumed enrollment, but the scale was small.

Reform and development
After the downfall of the Gang of Four, China's higher education is back on track.Since 1977, the unified enrollment and examination system for colleges and universities has been restored nationwide, and the university has resumed to enroll four-year undergraduate students.
In 1978, Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Institute of Physical Education and Shanghai Institute of Education separated from Shanghai Normal University, ending a six-year history of merging schools.[165]The files during the merging period shall be kept by East China Normal University.[165]After the campus, East China Normal University continued to use the name of "Shanghai Normal University".[165]
In September 1979, the university founded the Night University.[18]
On April 27, 1979, at the invitation of the University Party Committee, consultant to the Party School of the CPC Central Committee and vice president of the Academy of Social SciencesWu LiangpingAlumni came to the university to give a report entitled Situation and Some Theoretical Issues.During the reception, Wu Liangping asked about the change of the school name.After listening to the relevant information, he considered it improper not to restore the original name of his alma mater.He asked the school to send a letter to the Ministry of Education in the name of a people's letter from "some teachers of East China Normal University".After taking the letter back to Beijing, Wu Liangping personally sent it to the President of the Party School of the CPC Central CommitteeHu YaobangAnd the Minister of EducationJiang Nanxiang。On August 15, 1980, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the original name of "Shanghai Normal University" was restored to "East China Normal University".[165]

On November 26, 1981, with the approval of the State Council, East China Normal University became one of the first batch of doctoral and master's degree awarding units in China. In August 1997, Shanghai Preschool Normal College was incorporated into East China Normal University, and Shanghai Nanlin Normal School was under the management of East China Normal University. In September, it merged with the preschool education specialty of the Department of Education and the special education specialty of the Department of Psychology to form the preschool education and special education college.[21-22]

Qunxian Hall, also known as Wenshi Building, is a three storey white building with four classical buildings in front of the main gateRomanesqueArchitectural style gatepost.[163]It is the witness of modern Chinese history.In the early days of the War of Resistance against Japan, many of the school buildings on Zhongshan Road in Daxia were destroyed by gunfire, and Qunxian Hall was retained because it was occupied as a fake court in western Shanghai. The early buildings of East China Normal University are located in the campus of East China Normal University at 3663 North Zhongshan Road, including the activity center for veteran cadres, office building, "three halls" and Chairman Mao's portrait.The activity center for veteran cadres (No. 163, the first village of Shida), a two-story building with brick and wood structure, with a building area of 413 square meters, was used as aSun TaolinResidence of Vice President.The office building was built in 1952, a two-story building of brick concrete structure, with a building area of 1452 square meters.
