The earliest predecessor of Suzhou University was theSuzhou University(Soochow University, a company founded by the American Supervisory BoardChristian University[40]）It is the first university in China to establish a modern university discipline system.

In 1905, 12 college students were recruited.The Western learning courses of the school are generally modeled on those of American universities, while the Chinese learning is arranged by itself, with three branches of arts and science, medicine and theology, and several affiliated middle schools (located in Suzhou, Shanghai and Huzhou respectively).
In 1907, Shen Bofu, the first graduate, was awarded the bachelor's degree for the first time, which was the first bachelor of arts degree in China.

Suzhou Sericulture College, formerly known as the private Shanghai Women's Sericulture School run by Mr. Shi Liangcai, was founded in 1904.In 1911, it was changed into a public school and relocated to Hushuguan, Wuxian County. Suzhou Silk Institute of Technology was formerly the Shanghai Private Women's Sericulture Academy founded in 1903 (the earliest can be traced back to the Zhejiang Sericulture Academy in 1897), and was named Suzhou Silk Institute of Technology in 1960.

In 1956, it was renamed as Nantong Medical College due to the consolidation of the Party Committee of Subei District.[29]

On November 26, 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Suzhou Medical College became one of the first batch of units to confer doctor's and master's degrees in China.
In November 1992, Suzhou Medical College held its 80th anniversary.
In 1952, the colleges and departments in mainland China were adjusted. The College of Arts and Sciences of Soochow University, the College of Culture and Education in Southern Jiangsu, and the Department of Mathematics and Physics of Jiangnan University merged to form the Southern Jiangsu Normal College, which was renamed Jiangsu Normal College in the same year.

Yangchenghu Campus has three colleges, namely, Rail Transit College, Shagang Iron and Steel College and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering College.The College of Rail Transit is a new type of engineering college set up in response to the rapid development of China's urban rail transit industry. Founded in May 2008, it now has five undergraduate majors, including vehicle engineering, transportation, rail transit signal and control, electrical engineering and intelligent control, building environment and energy application engineering, and is oriented to rail transit construction and management and rail transit equipment,Cultivate high-quality talents with rail transit characteristics[50]。

Future Campus
This campus is located at No. 1, Jiuyong West Road, Wujiang District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. It is built along the Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal and Taihu Lake. It is a major project to deepen comprehensive cooperation between Suzhou University and Wujiang District, Suzhou City. It is the first university campus in China named after the "future", and the first campus in the Yangtze River Delta Ecological Green Integrated Development Demonstration Zone.The planned construction land is 1000 mu, "one time planning, phased construction"[49]。
Located on the main road of Suzhou University, it is a landmark building with a strong historical and cultural atmosphere.Its design inspiration comes from ancient Chinese culture and history.There is a huge plaque on the top of the gatehouse, with the words "Soochow University" written on it, highlighting the identity and historical significance of the building.As the gateway and symbol of Suzhou University, Dongwu Gate carries many important academic and cultural activities[48]。

Located in the headquarters of Suzhou University, it is the former site of Jinghai Women's Normal School, the main building of Jinghai Women's Normal School, and is now the Red Chamber Conference Center of Suzhou University.Its predecessor was Jinghai Women's School founded in Suzhou Tianci Village in 1902 (the 28th year of Guangxu's reign), which was originally built in memory of Hai Shude, a female missionary of the American Christian Supervision Union.In 1917, it was changed to Jinghai Women's Normal School.After the founding of New China, the school ceased to exist after splitting and merging.On December 23, 2004, the former site of Jinghai Female Teacher was listed as the fifth batch of municipal cultural relics protection units in Suzhou[48]。

Wenxing Pavilion
Commonly known as Bell Tower and Square Tower, it is located between Fengmen and Xiangmen in the east of Suzhou Ancient City, Jiangsu Province.The plane of the pavilion is square, with arches on four sides of each floor, and no waist eaves and flat seats between floors.The bottom floor is 8.6 meters wide, and the grading is not obvious from bottom to top, forming a layered and straight contour line.In 2002, Suzhou Wenxing Pavilion and the former site of Soochow University were listed as cultural relics protection units in Jiangsu Province[48]。

It is built in the middle of the central axis of the entire campus, and the location is properly selected to play a role in grasping the overall situation.The four subsequent buildings (Jingzheng Building, Weizheng Building, Zishi Hall, and Weige Hall) are all extended to the south with the clock tower as the main axis[48]。
