Font Introduction

Xia Tu Wen Kai It is an open source Chinese font supplemented by domestic font creator Luo Xia Gu Dun based on Klee One.

In December 2020, FONTWORKS, a famous Japanese font manufacturer, released 7 Japanese fonts , respectively Train, Klee, Stick, Rock-n-Roll, Reggae, Rampart and DotGothic 16 , licensed under SIL Open Font License 1.1. Each of the seven open source Japanese fonts has its own characteristics, and the largest number of characters is Klee 。

This is a typeface with Japanese textbook style, which has the characteristics of both Song Dynasty style and regular script. Some DIY font lovers have used Song Dynasty and other fonts to complete this font, which has been transplanted into iOS, Android and other mobile phone systems as the beautification font of mobile phone systems, and is welcomed by many mobile phone enthusiasts. However, such a complete font has some shortcomings.  

first , there are certain differences between the original font and the post complement font, resulting in some different characters (such as Klee's original Chinese characters and post complement simplified characters) mixed arrangement will have a certain sense of discord.

  second Because the font used for the complement is a commercial copyright font, it cannot be used for commercial purposes after completion, and there is also a risk of infringement. In addition, there are few regular script types and few imitation Song Dynasty types in the existing open source Chinese font library.

In view of this, and in order to enrich the regular script categories in the open source Chinese fonts, I began to try to complete simple and complex common characters for Klee One, a high-quality Japanese open source font, from January 20, 2021. Because the font has a certain "artistic flavor", it is named "Xia Tu Wen Kai" (In fact, it was originally felt that this font was suitable for text reading and was named "Wenkai". Later, it was found that this font might not be suitable for large text typesetting, but more suitable for medium length text typesetting such as poetry, or annotation typesetting.) 。 Since the regular weight of Klee One font is too small to be read, the SemiBold weight of the original font is selected as the regular weight. After a long period of accumulation, it has now developed into a family of three character heavy fonts supported by both simple and complex Japanese and Korean (Although it is a little rough)  。

Supplement plan

Simplified part

• Complete the simplified characters corresponding to the traditional characters in the original font;
• Complete 3603 common Chinese characters in Simplified Chinese ^① ;
• Complete 6763 Chinese characters in the "Coded Chinese Character Set for Information Interchange (GB 2312-80)";
• The 8105 Chinese characters in the "General Standard Chinese Character List" were completed;
• Modify and optimize font styles (The scope is GB 2312 and the Chinese character table in the general specification) 。 At present, the task of modifying glyphs has been basically completed, but there are still some glyphs to be optimized.

^① It includes "Modern Chinese Common Character List" (old 3500 characters) and "Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Common Character List" (new 3500 characters, first level character list of "General Standard Chinese Character List"). The new and old 3500 characters add up to 3603 characters.

Traditional part

• Complete Traditional Chinese 4808 Common Chinese Characters (Taiwan "Table of Common Chinese Standard Fonts")  ；
• Complete 6866 Chinese characters in "GB/T 12345-90";
• 5401 BIG5 first level (commonly used) Chinese characters were completed;
• Complete the traditional characters or Hong Kong and Taiwan variant characters corresponding to the Chinese characters in the "General Standard Chinese Character List";
• Complete the commonly used Cantonese, Minnan and Hakka pragmatic words. (Based on "List of commonly used words outside Hong Kong" ）

• Complete 20992 Chinese characters in CJK unified Chinese character base area (generated by deep learning, rough font)  ；
• Complete 2367 syllables of commonly used proverbs (Korean/Korean).

matters needing attention

1. As of Version 1.100 This font contains all CJK basic area Chinese characters, and a small number of extended A-G area Chinese characters.   If there is a need for word filling, please fill in the Issue #33 Propose not to open another issue.
2. I am not a professional designer, and I did not consider the aesthetic feeling of design, so I may look slightly ugly. The words added may be slightly incompatible with the original version, and there may be burrs in the contour curve of some characters in Bold; In addition, due to time constraints, there is no extra time for fine trimming, and the splicing of parts of some characters will be very stiff. If there are suggestions on font optimization, please click Issue #14 Propose not to open another issue. (Both of the above two issues have been tagged with long term and have been topped on the Issues page.)
3. Since the original "Xia Tu Wen Kai" regular characters are displayed in a smaller size on PC and Android screens, and the Bold characters can only be called in bold mode, the special production is based on the Bold characters Xia Tu Wen Kai Screen Reader/LXGW WenKai Screen The bold "Xia Tu Wen Kai" is as thick as the default English font Segoe UI Regular in Windows. The screen of PC and Android phones is more comfortable to read, and there is no need to switch to bold mode.
4. There is also a thicker and manually adjusted Xanadu Zhenkai/LXGW Zhenkai, which can reduce stroke adhesion while thickening. At present, it is in the testing stage, and will finally complete GB 2312 and the General Specification Chinese Character Table.
5. To facilitate developers to embed fonts in the software, follow the v1.008 The font size of Xia Tu Wen Kai Light Edition/LXGW WenKai Lite 。 Compared with the paragons in v1.100, some less commonly used Chinese characters added in v1.100 are removed, and the volume of the previous version is returned. If the full version has font optimization or feature updates, the compact version will also follow up (except for a large number of additions). The condensed version does not contain proverbs.

7. Recommended for matching Western fonts Ysabeau Series fonts. In addition, the combined font of Ysabeau Office and Xiatu Kaikai Light Edition LXGW Bright , using Font Merge Complete Tool The two fonts are combined to provide TTF and OTF formats.
8. In addition, this font also has a traditional Chinese version for traditional Chinese users and old font enthusiasts. It is based on the portable version and adopts the old font writing method. It mainly uses the hidden font of Klee One, and some parts are manually modified (most parts refer to Yidianzifang "Inherit the standardized document of font style" , with Doctor Han "Sinology fan" Zitong Network And other tools to check the characters according to the parts and modify the font). In addition, there are traditional Chinese fonts based on Klee One transformation Coriander/Iansui , using Taiwan's educational standard font, and " Coriander "Font.

• When creating a derived font, the font name cannot use the "reserved name" of the original font. The font retains the name "Xia Ya" and "LXGW". Based on the font derived from this font, the name cannot contain the words "Xia Ya" or "LXGW"; Without modifying the font source code, the font recompiled can continue to use the reserved names of the font, "Xia Ya" and "LXGW".
