"A Dream of Red Mansions" is one of the representative works of Chinese classical literature. The French full translation of "A Dream of Red Mansions" published in 1981 is the most complete and classic French translation. Its publication is also called "a great event in the French literary world in 1981" by French book critics.

In March 2014, President Xi Jinping, who was on a state visit to France, specially met with Li Zhihua, the translator of the French version of A Dream of Red Mansions, at the former site of the Sino French University in Lyon. Xi Jinping said that "A Dream of Red Mansions" is a huge work, and it is even more difficult to accurately and appropriately translate it into French. Li Lao's persistent spirit and academic talent are admirable.

China and France are the representatives of the two ancient and unique civilizations of the East and the West. President Xi Jinping once said that the distinctive cultures of the two countries deeply attract the people of the other side. Historically, Chinese culture has become a fashion in French society. Chinese cultural elements can be found in the works of French enlightenment thinkers and the decoration of Versailles Palace.
