Former title: WHO urges countries to build a fairer and healthier world
April 7 is World Health Day. On April 6, WHO issued a statement calling for five actions to improve the health of all people. Specific actions include accelerating the equitable provision of relevant technologies for coping with COVID-19 to countries, investing in basic health care, giving priority to health and social protection, establishing safe, healthy and inclusive communities, and strengthening data and health information systems.
In the statement, WHO pointed out that COVID-19 has aggravated the inequality in health and welfare between and within countries. It is estimated that the epidemic last year caused 119 million to 124 million people to fall into extreme poverty. More women than men have left the labor market in the past 12 months.
WHO Director General Tan Desai said that all governments should strengthen health services, remove barriers to use, and let more people have the opportunity to live a healthy life. (Chief reporter Zhu He)
