In February this year, after Huawei released Mate X, Haitong Securities released a research report saying that folding screen mobile phones can give consideration to both large size and portability, which is expected to become one of the main themes of the next round of mobile phone innovation, and multiple links of the supply chain meet new opportunities.
Haitong Securities believes that the change of folding mobile phone mainly lies in the material, which is reflected in the following points: flexible cover plate, hinge, touch, OCA glue, polarizer, driving IC package, etc.
(1) At present, the foldable OLED panel must be equipped with flexible TFT base plate and flexible upper cover plate. In the past, the mobile phone protection glass was mainly from Corning, but the bending degree of the foldable screen has increased significantly. (2) In order to realize the folding function, it is necessary to add a new mechanical structure, namely the rotating shaft, to accurately control the expansion and closure, and to withstand 200000 times of repeated use. For example, the multi-layer composite hinge innovatively released by Huawei mainly consists of a two-layer mechanical push-pull structure, which was carefully developed by Huawei engineers over three years;
(3) In terms of touch control, the traditional ITO film was used for the touch panel of mobile phones in the past, but the conductivity of ITO was significantly reduced after repeated or significant bending, so the current alternative materials are mainly metal grids and silver nanowires;
(4) The folding screen needs to be bent several times without affecting the bonding between the film layers, so the requirements for OCA adhesive are higher;
(5) In the aspect of polarizer, the thickness of polarizer also needs to be greatly reduced in order to achieve flexibility, lightness and thinness;
(6) In terms of drive IC packaging, Samsung currently adopts COP packaging process for OLED drive IC of foldable mobile phones. We speculate that Huawei may adopt COF packaging, and the corresponding drive IC design and COF material suppliers are expected to benefit.
Since the second half of this year, Huawei concept stocks have seen a wave of big gains.
