In 1960, he was admitted to the top secret major of Engineering Physics and Chemistry Department of South China Institute of Technology with excellent results. In 1963, this major was dismissed for some political reasons. In order to meet the needs of national construction, it was transferred to the major of pulp and paper. Graduated from South China Institute of Technology in 1965, majoring in pulp and paper engineering, and stayed in the school to teach until 2003.
In 1970, the domestic situation was slightly stable. Liu Huanbin served as the secretary of the branch of the pulp and paper company. The superior competent department began to assign some scientific research projects to colleges and universities. But at that time, many experts and professors were undergoing "labor reform" in the "May 7th" cadre school. Liu Huanbin took this opportunity to seconded them back for scientific research. As a result, the "man-made fiber" project that everyone worked together to research won the National Science and Technology Conference Award. From 1977 to 1978, he studied chemical process measurement and automatic control in the Department of Automation of South China Institute of Technology.
After 1978, Liu Huanbin's pulp and paper major started the professional system reform earlier.
