Doctors visit thousands of people and start the largest oral health survey in the province
On September 1, the provincial Health and Family Planning Commission decided to conduct a large-scale oral health epidemiological survey for the first time in the province in order to dynamically grasp the oral health status and influencing factors of different urban and rural populations in our province, and monitor the prevalence of common oral diseases such as caries and periodontal diseases.
The survey will select 12 counties and districts in the province, covering children, students, middle-aged and elderly people, with a total number of 14784 people. From September to November 2016, the investigation team composed of six municipal hospitals in Changsha, Zhuzhou, Yueyang, Yiyang, Hengyang and Loudi, as well as the provincial people's hospital and Xiangya Dental Hospital of Central South University will carry out a three-month household survey.
Investigation of oral precancerous lesions
Wu Bin (not his real name), a 35 year old man from Changsha, began to chew betel nuts in the sixth grade of primary school. At most, he ate more than ten packets a day. At the beginning of August, he was diagnosed with oral submucous fibrosis (oral precancerous lesions), which was mainly caused by chewing betel nut.
"Oral submucosal fibrosis, as a frequent disease in Hunan Province, has gradually increased in recent years, which is closely related to Hunan people's love of chewing betel nuts." Zhong Shengchun, deputy director of the provincial dental disease prevention and control guidance group office (provincial dental prevention and control office) and professor of stomatology in Tianxin Geyuan District of the provincial people's hospital, said that in many parts of the world, Oral cancer has become an increasingly serious public health problem. It is believed that oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) has cancer potential. Many experimental studies have confirmed that betel nut contains various carcinogens, chewing betel nut is closely related to oral submucous fibrosis and oral leukoplakia, and chewing betel nut increases the risk of oral cancer. At the same time, epidemiological research also found that the incidence of oral cancer in areas where betel nut is chewed is higher than that in areas where betel nut is not chewed.
However, so far, there is no organization to conduct a large-scale investigation on the incidence of oral submucous fibrosis among residents in our province. The first provincial oral health epidemiological survey launched this time will include oral submucous fibrosis screening into the scope of oral health survey, in order to obtain valuable first-hand information.
14784 people were investigated
This survey is the first and largest oral health epidemiological survey in the history of our province, covering children, students, middle-aged and elderly people. Twelve survey points (Yuhua District, Tianxin District, Lusong District, Ziyang District, Lengshuitan District, Hecheng District, Longhui County, Taoyuan County, Chaling County, Qidong County, Linxiang City, and Guidong County) were selected from the whole province, with half of them in urban and rural areas, and a total of 14784 people should be surveyed.
The survey includes two parts: questionnaire survey and oral health examination. Since some counties and districts in Hunan are high fluoride areas, and the fluoride content in drinking water is too high, which has a certain impact on the development of teeth and bones, it is also necessary to check the prevalence of dental fluorosis among people aged 12 years.
