[Global Times comprehensive report] The Japan Maritime Security Agency plans to hold joint training with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Korean Maritime Police Agency in the Sea of Japan early next month, which is the first joint maritime drill held by the three maritime police agencies.

Japan's Yomiuri Shimbun reported on the 17th that the Japanese government said that when the leaders of Japan, the United States and South Korea met at Camp David last August, they agreed to establish a framework for maritime security cooperation between the three countries. To this end, Japan, the United States and South Korea are coordinating the joint training in the sea area near Wuhe, Kyoto, Japan, on June 6. It is reported that Japan and South Korea have implemented joint search and rescue training since 2007. On this basis, patrol ships and UAVs of the U.S. Coast Guard will participate in the training, including search and rescue and communication training with Japan and South Korea. In addition to regular joint training, Japan, the United States and the ROK will also support Southeast Asian and Pacific island countries to improve their maritime security capabilities, deepen cooperation in collecting marine data, detecting suspicious ships and other related aspects, and point fingers at China, Russia and the DPRK. Japan, the United States and the Philippines also held the first joint exercise between maritime police agencies last June. On the 17th of this month, Japan also decided to provide the Philippines with five additional large patrol ships.

Lv Chao, president of the Institute of American and East Asian Studies of Liaoning University, said to the Global Times reporter on the 17th that Japan, the United States and South Korea had just held a joint military exercise at sea last month, and it was common for Japan, the United States and South Korea to continue to link their military alliances. The responsibilities of the maritime police and the navy are different. Japan, the United States and South Korea have tried to set a precedent for joint training of maritime police institutions and expand the scope of cooperation, which is very directional. In particular, the involvement of the United States as a foreign country in the region has a strong sense of provocation. (Xing Xiaojing)
