On May 14 local time, the US Department of Justice said in a court document that Boeing had violated the deferred prosecution agreement reached with the US Department of Justice on the crash of two 737 Max aircraft, and that the company "failed to design, implement and implement a compliance and ethics plan to prevent and detect violations of US fraud laws throughout its operations". The US Department of Justice said it was still deciding how to continue the investigation, including whether and how to punish the company. The Ministry of Justice has instructed Boeing to respond by June 13, providing its analysis and opinions, which will be taken into consideration in any punishment.

Boeing responded in a statement that it had received a request from the US Department of Justice for the company to respond, and that the company believed that it had fulfilled the terms of the agreement.

In 2018 and 2019, two Boeing 737MAX 8 passenger planes crashed in Indonesia and Ethiopia respectively, killing 346 people. In January 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a criminal lawsuit against Boeing, and reached an agreement to postpone the prosecution. Boeing agreed to pay more than 2.5 billion dollars in fines and compensation, and promised to implement compliance and improvement plans as required. The deferred prosecution agreement expired in January this year. In April this year, the family members of the passengers in the Ethiopian Airlines crash in 2019 met with officials in Washington and asked them to restart the criminal fraud charges against Boeing to determine that the company violated the terms of the 2021 settlement agreement.
