On the afternoon of May 18, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection issued a heavy news that Tang Renjian, secretary of the Party Leadership Group and minister of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, was suspected of serious violations of discipline and was currently under disciplinary review and supervision investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervision Commission. In recent years, it is rare for high-ranking officials in agriculture to fall down. This news is quite sudden. Three days ago, Tang Renjian also publicly participated in the event, and five days ago, he issued a department regulation. It is worth noting that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was listed as the object of the third round of inspection of the 20th Central Committee this year. The inspection team was stationed in April this year and is expected to work until July.
According to public data, Tang Renjian, male, Han nationality, born in August 1962, has a doctor's degree in economics and is a member of the Communist Party of China. It is noteworthy that Tang Renjian was also a member of the 19th and 20th Central Committee. Tang Renjian went to Beijing in 2020 to take over the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. During this period, he experienced a number of transformations in the work of "agriculture, rural areas and farmers".
From his resume, Tang Renjian has worked in the field of "agriculture, rural areas and farmers" for a long time. His career began in the Department of Policies and Regulations of the former Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, and then he worked in the central financial and economic leading group office, the central rural work leading group office and other high-level deliberation and coordination organizations within the party. Tang Renjian was transferred to other places twice in 2014 and 2017, and served as a member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, vice chairman of the District Government, deputy secretary of the Party Leadership Group, deputy secretary of the CPC Gansu Provincial Committee, governor of the province, secretary of the Party Leadership Group of the provincial government, etc. In 2020, Tang Renjian was transferred back to Beijing from Gansu to take over the post of Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
Tang Renjian's last public appearance was on May 15, when he participated in the National Rural Talent Working Conference in Xianyang, Shaanxi. Before the meeting, Tang Renjian also investigated the situation in Xianyang City, where the Party building led the talents to return to their hometown and start businesses, "Touyan" led the farmers to train and obtain employment, and agricultural science and technology talents promoted industrial technology innovation. Tang Renjian's further work can be traced back to the issuance of Decree No. 1 of 2024 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs on May 13, which promulgated the Administrative Measures for Statistical Work of Agricultural and Rural Departments.
In recent years, there have been few high-level officials in the field of "agriculture, rural areas and farmers". Previously, most of the officials were at the grass-roots level and some middle level officials. For example, Lu Guimin, the former director of the Department of Farmland Construction and Management of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas, fell in 2020, and Liu Yingjie, the former deputy director of the Department of Personnel and Labor of the Ministry of Agriculture, in 2023.
This year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs was included in the third round of inspection of the 20th Central Committee. In the middle of April, the second inspection group of the Central Committee held a mobilization meeting for the work of the Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Areas. Tang Renjian also presided over the meeting and delivered a speech. Kong Shenggen, the leader of the second inspection group of the Central Committee, said in his speech that he should focus on power and responsibility, strengthen the supervision of "top leaders", focus on strengthening inspection and rectification, deeply find political deviations, promote the solution of prominent problems, and effectively play the role of political supervision and guarantee.

For the problems raised and fed back by the central inspection team, it is necessary to attach great importance to them, draw out a list, clarify responsibilities, refine measures, respond one by one, and make rectification based on the real situation, so as to build a long-term mechanism. The information released at that time said that the central inspection team would work in the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs for about three months. The inspection team will accept the petition until July 12, 2024. According to the regulations on inspection work, the central inspection team mainly receives letters, calls and visits reflecting the problems of the leading group of the Party Leadership Group of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and its members, the main heads of the lower level Party organizations and key posts, focusing on reports and reflections on violations of political discipline, organizational discipline, integrity discipline, mass discipline, work discipline and life discipline.
