Have you escaped from the besieged city?

For a long time, Internet companies have been criticized for their ineffectiveness, difficulty in promotion, risk of layoffs, and 35 year old crisis. In contrast, Hong Kong, which is short of workers, is targeted by Internet giants. So, what about the working and living conditions of those who went to Hong Kong? Did you escape the siege?

"Sina News Presence" chatted with several people from a large floating factory in Hong Kong. It can be clearly felt that Hong Kong's "robbing people" has played a role. In recent years, the content of Putonghua in Hong Kong's workplace has increased, but there has not been an explosive growth. Both in the workplace and in the social circle, it is a normal flow.

They have some common characteristics. For example, they pay more attention to their career and do not consider buying a house and getting married for the time being. At the same time, they also believe that there are thousands of people and their stories can only represent a part of the state of floating in Hong Kong.

The way out for 35 year old Dachang people is to sell insurance in Hong Kong

Ricky, a former senior Alibaba marketing expert

At the beginning of this year, Ricky took the initiative to end his 10 years of ups and downs in the Internet factory. Previously, he worked in marketing in Didi and Alibaba successively, and became a senior expert.

The reason for leaving is that he has reached the age of 35 and has not yet been promoted to the management level. It may be too late to start looking for a job after being optimized. He does not want to wait for death. A friend learned that Hong Kong has an IANG retroactive signing policy, that is, students who have studied in Hong Kong can renew their contracts as long as they receive an offer from a Hong Kong company, and they resolutely started the application process. The current plan is to stay in Hong Kong for seven years and get permanent residence status.

After giving up his job as a brilliant factory, Ricky now joins a leading insurance company in Tsimshatsui, Hong Kong. He takes the subway for half an hour every day from his room located in the New Territories, 7 square meters, and goes downstairs to the Harbor City to raise cards and solicit customers. The monthly rent is 6000, and the roommate is two college students.

The so-called brand raising is equivalent to the most basic push in the insurance industry. As long as face is not considered, this is the fastest way for newcomers to find customers. As one of the largest shopping malls in Hong Kong, an average of 200000 tourists shop for various luxury goods in Harbour City every day during peak seasons, and they are Ricky's best target customers.

According to the latest statistics of the Quarterly Statistical Report of the Comprehensive Household Survey, the fourth quarter of 2023 by the Statistics Department of the Hong Kong Government, the most profitable industry in Hong Kong is "finance and insurance", with a median monthly salary of HK $36700, 73% higher than the median monthly employment income of the public of HK $21200.

There are also high risks associated with high salaries. Ricky claims to be a "moonlight clan". He doesn't have any savings. It's not uncommon that he can't sell his money alive or dead. For a period of time when he just arrived in Hong Kong, his living cost was paid by credit card.

On the other hand, the insurance industry has its own bias, which is considered to be an overdraft business. In Jianzhong Internet, there is a self mockery that the end of a big factory is to run Didi and sell insurance.

In the eyes of Hong Kong drifters, finance and it are the best solutions. More people prefer to use insurance as an alternative springboard for visa renewal, and have to make transition when necessary. "Some people will think that this industry is relatively low", Ricky said frankly that when the Harbor City raised the placard, they walked over to talk with tourists, and some people would directly roll their eyes, "but prejudice is their business, and I just need to earn money. As long as I persist, someone will pay attention to you, and one in a hundred people who pay attention to you will certainly make a deal."

Ricky is not worried about the future. He thinks that no matter how difficult Hong Kong is, it will be easier than working in a big factory.

My parents are in the northeast, and they are able to provide for the elderly on their own, but they are alone, without housing loans and car loans, and just enjoy themselves.

Friendly but automatically layered intimate social circle

Gabi | TVB feature film reporter

For a long time, the famous TVB in Hong Kong only recruited local people from Hong Kong. With the deepening cooperation with the mainland, and the gradual emergence of Mandarin programs, TVB began to recruit mainland people. In April 2021, Gabi quit his job on NetEase, caught the early bus of opening up, and became a very few mainland employees in TVB.

For her, the job hopping from Netease to TVB is from the comfort zone to the challenge zone.

The difference in pronunciation is a gap that needs time to cross. Most of her colleagues in the workplace are Hong Kong people. At the beginning, Gabi was not familiar with Cantonese, and some feature films could not be dubbed by herself. If she went out for an interview, she would ask her colleagues to record the questions in advance, and practice them several times by herself. However, when it comes to real conversation, she would still be seen through by the local elderly, and teased her to practice again. Now she has switched to the Chinese channel.

In Gabi's opinion, there is basically no problem to integrate into the local social circle. Everyone is friendly and often chats and eats together, but the closest layer is still the mainland people. Most Hong Kong people live in this city from birth to study. They have formed a mature social circle when growing up, and people of the right age have found a marriage or love partner very early.

But in Hong Kong, no one cares about your emotional situation. For Hong Kong drifters, it is relatively difficult to set up a family. Those financial people in Central have no patience to read a long article, let alone spend time and effort to develop and manage a relationship.

In order to live with friends, Gabi chose to live in Wanchai, Hong Kong Island, and commute to Tseung Kwan O in the New Territories every day. This means a higher cost of living. It costs 15000 Hong Kong dollars per month for two people to rent together and 30 Hong Kong dollars per day for the subway.

Different from the mainland, the MTR adopts a section by section pricing system, with a minimum fare of HK $4, and then increases section by section with the travel distance, with a maximum of HK $46. Pricing standards are closely related to the geographical environment. For example, taking the subway from Hong Kong Island to the Kowloon Peninsula requires crossing the submarine tunnel, which is expensive even if only one stop is taken.

She said, "I was lucky to meet a good leader at NetEase who protected us and did not feel the pressure of the so-called Dachang People 996. On the contrary, after coming here, the pressure has become much greater, the working hours have become longer, and the cost of living has become higher. In addition, in Hong Kong, the media is not an industry that can bring high salary treatment, which can be said to be very low. In fact, the money that can be saved as a whole is not as good as that in large factories. "

When asked how long he would stay, Gabi replied, "I used to think that if I wanted to choose a city in the world to live in for a long time, I would definitely choose Hong Kong as my first choice. But Hong Kong has changed a lot in recent years, and some friends have left here in succession. I'm not sure whether I will leave in the future."

In TVB, the main basis for promotion is seniority. When seniority reaches, it will be promoted naturally. Otherwise, it will be useless even if the performance is good. Gabi understands that there is another workplace rule behind the absence of promotion pressure and the anxiety of the 30-year-old management. It is hard to say which is better.

Is Harbor Drifting a Good Choice?

Affected by various reasons, Hong Kong is short of labor force. Data shows that in the past five years, Hong Kong's working population has decreased by about 219000, while the number of job vacancies in enterprises has increased from about 39000 in March 2021 to about 78000 in March 2023, with a vacancy rate of 2.8%, a new high in nine years. Among them, the most scarce industries are science and technology, medical care, education, bank insurance and aviation, construction, hotel services, etc. Shao Jiahui, a member of the Hong Kong Legislative Council, believes that the reason for the shortage of staff in Hong Kong is the aging population and Hong Kong immigrants.

The Hong Kong government has introduced a series of policies to "rob people", which has ignited the enthusiasm of a large number of talents to work in Hong Kong. It includes but is not limited to the "Plan for Importing Mainland Talents (Talent Plan)" launched in 2003, the "Plan for Entering Outstanding Talents (Talent Plan)" launched in 2006, and the "High end Talent Pass Plan (Talent Plan)" launched at the end of 2022.

Only last year, 140000 people were approved through various talent introduction plans. According to Liepin's Big Data Insight into Employment Trends in the First Half of 2023, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing are the top three cities for talent distribution in Hong Kong, accounting for 23.77%, 13.22% and 11.96% respectively. Mandarin is more and more common in Hong Kong's workplace.

With the doubling of the number of applicants, the Hong Kong government has become more strict in the selection of outstanding talents, which not only focuses on industries, but also requires higher academic qualifications. According to the statistics of the Immigration Department of Hong Kong, the approved industries are concentrated in financial and accounting services, information technology and telecommunications, accounting for 50% - 60% of the total.

According to education background, applicants with higher education background above master's degree have more advantages. In the first quarter of 2024, only 22 people with bachelor's degree in the Talent Program were approved, accounting for less than 1%.

How many of these talents really want to stay in Hong Kong? By the end of February this year, 59000 people had been approved for the talent plan, and 44000 of them had arrived in Hong Kong through the plan. After some applicants get their identity, the first question they ask is: "Why not renew the contract without living in Hong Kong?"

Hong Kong fever has supported a number of immigration agencies, but the consultation market is mixed. A large number of immigration agency advertisements have sprung up on social media, as well as marketing agencies' fabricating fake experience of floating in Hong Kong. Netizens complained: "template work and education experience, lifeless photos with no feelings and no characteristics, stereotyped text introduction 1234. They started advertising without saying a word, with a high profile that basically meets the public's aesthetic standards, and no bottom line copying."

An intermediary practitioner once revealed the industry inside story to the Associated Press of Finance: "Low price Hong Kong identity applications are usually submitted regardless of whether they are approved or not. Some intermediaries use a more confusing refund system, such as charging applicants 50000 yuan. If they are not approved, they will return 30000 to 42000 yuan of" service fees ". They only want to earn the non refundable money at the beginning."

Although Hong Kong still has great appeal, there are too many factors to consider for migrant workers. Some people are reluctant to turn back, others are hesitant, and some are in a dilemma.
