Former Motorola CEO: Apple is to blame for Nexus 6's lack of fingerprint identification

Sina Technology News In the early morning of January 27, Beijing time, since Motorola Mobile released the Nexus 6, there have been rumors in the market that this kind of mobile phone was very close to equipped with a fingerprint sensor. According to Dennis Woodside, the former CEO of Motorola Mobile and the current cloud storage service provider Dropbox COO (Chief Operating Officer), the reason why Nexus 6 is not equipped with fingerprint sensors is that the sensors available in the market are not good enough.

Woodside said in an interview that because Apple The company acquired the "best" fingerprint identification technology supplier, which led to Motorola Mobile and other Android manufacturers having to use the "second best supplier", and the supplier's technology has not yet been developed. In 2012, Apple purchased the fingerprint sensor manufacturer AuthenTec for 356 million dollars.

Woodside also agrees with many people that the Nexus 6 is too big to use with one hand. He said: "This phone is too big. For me, it is really a bit big."

In fact, Motorola once produced a mobile phone equipped with an AuthenTec fingerprint sensor in 2011, that is, the Atrix 4G. At that time, Apple had not yet acquired AuthenTec. Recently, it has been reported that Samsung is still dissatisfied with its fingerprint sensing function and may use new fingerprint sensor components. Samsung currently uses CrucialTec fingerprint sensors on Galaxy S5 and other devices.

For Apple, the Authentic deal turned out to be a great deal. Generally speaking, Apple will always seek full control over the technology it uses. This M&A transaction not only enabled Apple to obtain the best fingerprint sensing technology, but also was a setback for the company's competitors. Many years after the deal was completed, other companies are still trying to keep pace with Apple in the field of fingerprint sensing. (Tang Feng)
