The yacht from "crossing" is retro or outdated?

Introduction: Will this become a new trend in yacht design? The 40m Taransay produced by Rossinavi Shipyard seems to have "crossed" from the 1930s. But she doesn't look like an outdated old boat when she berths on the water, because in the collision of the styles of the new and old times, she shows the perfect integration of traditional yachts and modern aesthetics.

When I saw Taransay in Viareggio, Italy, being hoisted to launch, I was thinking: Why is someone keen on building such a retro yacht? Compared with modern yachts of the same specification, Taransay has narrow windows, obstructed vision and relatively limited internal space. In addition, how to load the modern complex system on this retro boat is also a big problem.

A few months later in Venice, I was invited to board the boat and participate in the first voyage of Taransay with the ship owner and his family. Before departure, the captain Marco Santoro answered my above questions in detail.

I participated in the initial construction plan of Taransay when I was the captain of Ocean Glory. Ocean Glory, formerly named Destiny, was published by GL Watson&Co in Scotland in 1935. After his adventurous experience, when he arrived in Genoa, Destiny was in a worried state, so he carried out a comprehensive repair at Amico&Co Shipyard. At the 2007 Monaco Yacht Show, she returned with honor and attracted attention.

The owner of Taransay fell in love with Ocean Glory at a glance in the yacht rental market. After the expiration of the lease contract for several consecutive years, he was full of hope to own a classic yacht of his own. After some investigation, he bought and rebuilt Taransay.

"I love classic yachts because I enjoy the journey of taste rather than the passion brought by the so-called speed." - Taransay shipowner.

The ship owner said: "In the past few years, I realized that I loved classic yachts because I enjoyed the journey of taste rather than the passion brought by the so-called speed." During the annual Mediterranean cruise of 2012 Ocean Glory, he accidentally found a modern version of a classic yacht built by Royal Huisman, which is retro and elegant. Taking this as a reference, he customized his own classic yacht and solved many problems encountered in the repair process.

About Taransay

One point has been established at the beginning of the project. The new ship style follows Ocean Glory. Its design company GL Watson&Co is the representative of yacht manufacturers in the early 20th century, and has built many star yachts. Madiz, Blue Bird, Nahlin and Edward VII's Royal Yacht Britannia are all works of its founder George Lennox Watson or his studio. Now William Collier is responsible for the operation of this company. The entrepreneur has obtained a doctorate in yacht history. He is committed to building classic yachts, such as Malahne. He is also good at drawing inspiration from classic projects in the past.

After deciding to copy the classic, the shipowner entrusted Rossinavi Shipyard to build it. The construction team encountered the first problem: because there was no existing platform and design scheme for reference, the design team, the ship owner and the technical department had to search for ideas and collect information from existing old photos. The most difficult thing is how to show the comfort, sense of space and ancillary facilities that modern yachts should have under the appearance of classic yachts in the 1930s. As the shipowner said, "This project draws on classic beauty and modern practicality."

As the shipowner said, "This project draws on the classic beauty and modern practicality."

The team determined the transformation plan of the 39.3m half row yacht, with a canoe shaped stern and a high bow to maximize the space inside the yacht. The hull is made of steel, and the superstructure is made of aluminum. The interior is exclusively customized by Alain Tassin, a senior French designer. Previously, he was also involved in the reconstruction of Ocean Glory. "We try to create a gentlemanly yacht style," Tassin said. "The owner of the boat pays special attention to the layout and overall feeling of the yacht, so we work closely to give Taransay a suitable look and vitality.".

Modern interior of Taransay

After studying the layout and characteristics of several reconstructed classic yachts, Alain Tassin uses teak, outdoor deck beams and simple white dashboard in a unified and harmonious style. Such a fresh color scheme makes the whole yacht full of elegant and cordial atmosphere. "The simple and plain layout of the main deck is waiting for guests to come. The internal cabin is painted with delicate white paint, which especially sets off the texture and luster of the gray wood dashboard." Tassin continued to explain, "In this way, the lower deck cabin is bright and ventilated even though only small portholes are installed. The dark brown leather floor tiles laid in cabins, stairways and halls show the practicality and beauty of modern decoration - the leather becomes softer and gives off warm luster over time.

Push open the double glass door to enter the main salon suitable for resting. Although the small porthole can not penetrate too much natural light, the sharp contrast between the lacquer mahogany decoration and the glass panel is still noticeable. Go through the salon to the front kitchen. The setting of this space is a completely modern product. You can find the details and appliances that modern yachts should have here. For example, customized refrigerators and small wine cellars perfectly match the comfortable and hospitable atmosphere of the restaurant. Then come to the cockpit mixed with classic and modern styles: modern instruments and display screens are embedded on a wooden workbench, a compass made of wood and brass is placed on the table, and a teak steering wheel is in front of the table.

The layout of the lower deck of Taransay is unusual. The steering engine room separates the passenger compartment. There are two passenger compartments in the front of the engine room, and the master suite and other passenger compartments are behind the engine room. The master suite is the same width as the ship, and there is a standard room behind it. The cabin at the stern feels very spacious, which is an elaborate design combining classic style and comfortable life. All cabins are equipped with independent bathrooms and marble countertops and shower rooms with the same style.

Guests can walk up the VIP standard room and VIP king bed room in front of the engine room from the special stairs in the catering area. The cabin that can accommodate six crew members is located in the front of the lower deck, and the rear of the cab is the master's exclusive big bed room.

Both inside and outside the yacht are full of retro flavor. The bronze handle and hinge at the front deck hatch and the classical decoration all over the yacht make guests dream of the 1930s. All personnel involved in the project will do their best to make Taransay a classic of the times. "Our goal is to restore the owner's extremely intoxicated feeling and quality of life in Ocean Glory. Rossinavi Shipyard is also very willing to help us with the repair work. I would love to work with them! " The captain sighed.

Upper deck leisure space

After launching the auxiliary boat, the upper deck becomes a spacious area for resting when landing. The L-shaped sofa and the elevating table can be easily changed into an outdoor dining area. The folding crane is used to tow and start the auxiliary boat, and there is a small wine bar equipped with refrigerator and freezer beside it. In fact, the best rest area is the sunbathing deck of the stairs. Whether here or on the main deck, guests can walk around and chat. The spacious external corridor has no impact on the comfort of the internal space. The width of 7.6 meters is enough for guests to relax at will.

The canoe shaped stern is a bathing platform, which can also be changed into any modern yacht facilities according to the owner's wishes, such as a seaside club. In addition, the starboard boarding platform is also a seaside club. Lowering the platform to sea level can facilitate guests to get on and off the yacht. In addition, it is also an ideal diving platform and boat driving platform. The sparkling light of the North Adriatic waves shines on the yacht's dark blue paint, making it more bright and charming. It is not easy to achieve a pleasing appearance on such a reconstruction project, and painting on old steel and rivets is definitely a difficult project.

"Getting the results I want from the reconstruction work - like a gamble, you never know what you will get in the end. During the construction process, I always hope to get the best results. Taransay is a microcosm of yachts in the old era, and all my favorite elements are concentrated on it. Thanks to fate, I have this perfect yacht. Moreover, she is as spacious and comfortable as other modern 40 meter yachts. " The complete answer of the ship owner solved the mystery in my heart - "Why is someone keen on building such a retro yacht?"
