Founded in December 1949, the school has gone through the school running stages of Qinghai Youth Cadre Training Class, Qinghai People's Public School, Qinghai Ethnic Public School, Qinghai Institute for Nationalities, etc.In 2002 and 2005, Qinghai Normal College and Xining Railway Driver School were merged into Qinghai Institute for Nationalities.In April 2009, it was renamed Qinghai University for Nationalities.In 2012, the Ministry of Education determined thatTianjin UniversitySupport Qinghai University for Nationalities.In 2017,Xiamen UniversitySupport Qinghai University for Nationalities.[1]
As of January 2024, the school is divided into five campuses, namely Dongxu, Xikun, Wenshi, Boya and Nanshan, covering an area of 1383 mu and a building area of 451600 square meters;The book value of fixed assets is about 1.55 billion yuan, of which the total value of teaching instruments and equipment is 210 million yuan;3.8286 million books (including 2.1252 million e-books);It has 22 teaching colleges and 60 undergraduate majors;It has 1 first level discipline authorized for doctoral degree, 17 first level disciplines authorized for master's degree, and 16 professional master's degree programs;There are 1237 teaching staff and 801 full-time teachers;There are 20901 students studying in school, including 11507 minority students.[46]

As of January 2024, the school has edited and published《Qinghai Ethnic Studies》Journal of Qinghai University for Nationalities (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition, Tibetan Edition) and《Qinghai Tibet Plateau Forum》Four academic journals published at home and abroad, including Qinghai Ethnic Studies and Journal of Qinghai University for Nationalities (Philosophy and Social Sciences Edition), were included in the core journal directory of Peking University, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Nanjing University's Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI) (expanded version).[7]
The predecessor of Journal of Qinghai University for Nationalities (Social Science Edition), Qinghai University for Nationalities (Quarterly · Internal Distribution), was founded in 1975. It is a comprehensive core academic journal sponsored by the head of Qinghai University for Nationalities.It has been included in the Source Journals of the Comprehensive Evaluation Database of Chinese Academic Journals, the Source Journals of the Citation Database of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Journals Included in the Database of Chinese Core Journals (Selection), and has been added to the databases of CNKI, Chongqing Weipu, Wanfang, etc.[76]
Qinghai Ethnic Studies, founded in 1989, is a comprehensive national core academic journal of ethnology sponsored by the College of Ethnology and Sociology of Qinghai Minzu University and the Qinghai Ethnic Studies InstitutePeking University Library and other institutions have been rated as core journals, becoming the only three core journals in the field of social sciences in Qinghai Province.[75]

Qinghai Minzu University is divided into five campuses: Dongxu, Xikun, Wenshi, Boya and Nanshan, covering an area of 1383 mu and a building area of 451600 square meters;The book value of fixed assets is about 1.55 billion yuan, of which the total value of teaching instruments and equipment is 210 million yuan;3828600 books and materials (including 2125200 electronic books), including 120000 ethnic books, 1667 Tibetan classics, 3166 Chinese ancient books 78750 books (including 380 rare books), 23 ancient books included in the National Precious Ancient Books List, and 183 books per student,It is the university with the largest collection of Chinese ancient books and Tibetan ancient books on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau, especially the largest collection of precious ancient books. This campus is located at No. 3, Bayi Middle Road, Chengdong District, Xining City, Qinghai Province. It is said that it was a university in the Xia Dynasty, and later became the general name of the traditional Chinese culture and the school.The East Campus is named after this, which shows that it is the earliest campus established in the campus of Qinghai University for Nationalities and even in the universities in Qinghai Province[69]。The campus is composed of Hongwen Building, Yinghua Building, Wenhua Building, Danqing Building, Hongyi Building, Tibetan Building, library, basketball court, canteen, student bath activity center and track and field field.Dormitory buildings in the East Campus are collectively called Lvtao Apartments[70]。

He graduated from Qinghai Institute for Nationalities in 1974, and later served as the Party Secretary of Suoja Township and Deputy Secretary of Zhiduo County Party Committee.In July 1992, Sonandaj organized China's first armed anti poaching team.
