On March 8, 1983, the Guangdong Provincial Government replied that the Shenzhen Municipal Government "agreed to establish Shenzhen University".It was decided at the meeting that the campus would be located in Guimiao District, Houhaiwan, and one square kilometer (1500 mu) would be designated as the campus area.

On February 7, 1984, the first phase of the construction of Shenzhen University officially broke ground.From September 4-6, the administrative departments and departments moved into the new campus of Yuehaimen from the temporary campus in the urban area.
On June 12, 1985, the Higher Education Bureau of Guangdong Province approved Shenzhen University to enroll students in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Fujian from that year.With the approval of No. 011 Document of the Department of Education and Research of the former National Education Commission, Shenzhen University began to "jointly train" graduate students in political economy and business management with South China Normal University, South China University of Technology and other universities.[52]

In early July 1994, the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government officially approved the establishment of the Board of Directors of Shenzhen University.September 1, via Guangdong Province andShenzhen Municipal People's Government Approved the cancellation of the original Shenzhen Teachers College and its establishmentNormal College of Shenzhen University。[9]
In April 1995, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the National Education Commission.
In July 1996, with the approval of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, Shenzhen University became the only new master's degree awarding unit among the local universities in China that year. Three disciplines (specialties), namely, "Political Economy (Special Zone Economy)", "Communication and Electronic Systems", and "Architectural Design and Theory", were granted the right to grant master's degrees.[55]In the same year, the school established the Department of Mathematics Education of Normal University.[90]
In 1998, the Department of Mathematics of the College of Science was established.[90]
In 2005, it was approved to become an authorized unit for the professional degree of master of engineering, and two new fields of master of engineering were added.
On January 25, 2006, the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the University to be added as a doctoral degree awarding unit, with the authorized disciplines and majors being political economy, optical engineering, information and signal processing, of which optical engineering is a first-class discipline.In the same year, Shenzhen National Biochemical Engineering Technology Development Center was incorporated into Shenzhen University as a whole;The university has been selected as the national cultural quality education base for college students.[10]In the same year, the Department of Mathematics Education and the Department of Mathematics merged to establish the School of Mathematics and Computational Science.[90]

In 2008, the Xuefu Hospital project under construction was officially transferred from the Municipal Health Bureau to Shenzhen University.
In October 2009, Shenzhen University andShenzhen Metro Group Co., LtdJointly set up the rail transit college, relying on the construction, operation and management of the electromechanical and control engineering college.In December, Shenzhen University was qualified to enroll master and doctoral students.[56]
In 2010, it was approved by the Ministry of Education and became an authorized unit to promote free students.
In January 2013,School of Industrial Design, Shenzhen University (Yantian)It was officially unveiled in Yantian.On January 29, it was selected into the national innovation and entrepreneurship training plan for college students.In March, Xili Campus of Shenzhen University officially started construction.In April, the school established the Medical Department of Shenzhen University.
In 2017, the talent training and national conditions research base of the Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences of Shenzhen University and the Marxism Institute of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences jointly recruited doctoral students of "backbone talents of Marxist theory" and carried out cooperative training.On February 27, School of Materials, School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, School of Life and Marine Sciences, and Department of Medicine of Shenzhen University officially settled in Xili Campus of Shenzhen University, and Xili Campus was officially opened.In November, it was awarded the first National Civilized Campus.In December, Shenzhen University became a member of Guangdong Hong Kong Macao University Alliance.In the same year, Shenzhen University issued a document to establish the Teachers' Department.[12-14]

In June 2022, Shenzhen International Maritime Research Institute was inaugurated.[77]In July, Shenzhen University signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CEC.[76]On November 6, Xilihu International Science and Education City X9 University Institute Alliance was established, with Shenzhen University as the initial member.[79]In December, Nanshan District Domestic Waste Classification University Alliance, the first university domestic waste classification alliance in Shenzhen, was established, which was formed by 7 universities including Shenzhen University.[80]
In March 2023, according to the WeChat official account of Tokyo College of Shenzhen University, the first overseas branch of Shenzhen University opened overseas, Tokyo College of Shenzhen University, will open in April. The Journal of Shenzhen University (Humanities and Social Sciences Edition) is the "First National Double Top Ten Social Sciences Journal", the "National University Social Sciences Famous Journal", the source journal of the "Chinese Social Sciences Citation Index (CSSCI)", the "National Chinese Core Journal", the "Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Core Journal", and the "RCCSE China Core Academic Journal (A)".The theme of the journal is: China Road (the road of socialism with Chinese characteristics).[73]
