Guilin Medical College was founded in 1935, formerly known as Guangxi Provincial Guilin Senior Midwifery Nursing School. In 1958, the school was upgraded to Guilin Medical College, and in 1987, it was upgraded to Guilin Medical College. In 1993, it was qualified to enroll foreign students. In 2006, it was granted the right to confer a master's degree. In 2015, it was approved to establishPost-Doctoral Research Center 。In 2019, the Department of Education of the Autonomous Region announced that it would apply to change its name to Guilin Medical University.In 2021, it will become a doctoral degree awarding unit and be approved as a professional degree granting point for clinical doctors.[3][5-6]

In 1935, Mr. Li Zuwei, a famous Chinese surgeon and medical educator, who was the first Chinese to obtain a doctor's degree at Chiba Medical University in Japan, founded Guilin Senior Midwifery Nursing School in Guangxi Province.The school is located at the foot of the Diecai Mountain.[3][7]
In 1958, the school was renamed "Guilin Medical College", and all college students were enrolled.The affiliated hospital was established on May 1 (todayAffiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical College）。[3]
In 1966, the "Cultural Revolution" began, and the school closed classes and stopped recruiting students.
In 1970, the school resumed enrollment and classes, and enrolled six "workers, peasants and soldiers".
In 1977, the school enrolled students who resumed the unified college entrance examination system.
In 1987, with the approval of the former National Education Commission, Guilin Medical College was established with undergraduate system.
In September 1989, with the approval of the Health Department of the Autonomous Region, Guilin People's Hospital was designated as the teaching hospital of Guilin Medical College.[8]
In 1993, he was qualified to enroll foreign students.
In 1996, the school successfully passed the undergraduate teaching qualification evaluation of the Ministry of Education.In July, Guilin Third People's Hospital (Infectious Diseases Hospital) affiliated to Guilin Medical College was established.[9]
In January 2004, Nanxishan Hospital (the Second People's Hospital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region) became the Affiliated Nanxishan Hospital of Guilin Medical College (Nanxishan Clinical Medical College).[9-10]
In April 2005, Guilin Second People's Hospital (the Second Clinical Medical College) affiliated to Guilin Medical College was established.[9]
In 2006, the university obtained the right to grant master's degree and three master's degree awarding points.In April, it was selected as the National Cultural Quality Education Base for College Students.In June, Wuzhou Red Cross Hospital (the Third Clinical Medical College) affiliated to Guilin Medical College was established.[3][11]
In 2007, the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China confirmed Guilin Medical College as an excellent school for undergraduate teaching evaluation.
In 2008, with the consent of the People's Government of Guilin City, the People's Hospital of Lingui County was allocated to the Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical College as a whole as the Lingui Hospital District (nowThe Second Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical College）。

In September 2015, the Affiliated Hospital of Guilin Medical CollegePost-Doctoral Research Center Approved for establishment.Since the same year, it has jointly trained doctoral students with Central South University.[45]
