In November 1952, the Culture and Education Committee under the Central South Administrative Committee held a meeting on higher education planning, and decided to build three new engineering colleges in Wuhan - Huazhong Machinery College, Central South Power College and Central South Water Conservancy College.

In 1971, Wuhan Institute of Machinery was closed, and some majors and more than 300 faculty were merged into Huazhong Institute of Technology.
From 1972 to 1979, it took in more than 600 experts and professors from all over the country.

In 1978, after the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, the school entered a new stage of vigorous development.In 1978, it resumed to enroll graduate students, and 181 graduate students were enrolled that year.
In 1979, the first liberal arts research institution, the Chinese Language Institute, was established.
At the end of the 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, a number of technology disciplines with broad prospects, such as laser technology, computer science and technology, information engineering, microwave technology, were established.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the university became one of the first batch of units to confer doctor's and master's degrees in China.[16]

Tongji Medical University, formerly directly under the Ministry of Health, was founded in 1907 by Dr. Erich Bollong, a German doctorGerman Medical School。
In 1893, Erich Bollong, a German naval ship doctor, went to Shanghai to establish the German Medical Association.
Tongji University Medical College was named Tongji Medical College in Central South China after it moved to Wuhan
In 1900, Baolong founded Tongji Hospital. Most doctors came from the German Medical Association.

In 1937, colleges of arts, science and law were set up successively to become a comprehensive national university.
In August 1948, the Institute of Bacteria of the Medical College enrolled graduate students in the newspaper.[19]
On June 25, 1949, the Shanghai Municipal Military Control Commission of the Chinese People's Liberation Army took over Tongji University.Since January 27, 1950, the school has been under the charge of the Ministry of Education of the East China Military and Political Commission.
Former Tongji Medical University
Since February 1950, in order to support the medical and health services in Hunan, Hubei, Guangdong, Guangxi, Henan and Jiangxi provinces (central and southern regions), the Medical College of Tongji University and its affiliated Tongji Hospital have moved to Wuhan and been under the charge of the Ministry of Health of the Central and Southern Military and Political Commission;In October 1950, it was merged with the Medical College of Wuhan University and named as Central South Tongji Medical College.
In June 1955, Hankou Union Medical College Hospital was incorporated into Central South Tongji Medical College as an affiliated hospital.Some teachers and students from Wuhan Zhongnan Medical College, the former Shandong Medical College and the Health Department of Zhejiang Medical College were also merged.[20]In August 1955, it was renamed Wuhan Medical College;In 1956, it began to enroll graduate students;After the "Cultural Revolution", it was directly under the leadership of the Ministry of Health.

Former Wuhan Urban Construction College
In 1926, Hubei Senior Engineering Middle School, Hubei Senior Business Middle School and Hubei Provincial No. 5 Middle School established Hubei Provincial No. 2 Middle School.
In 1927, Hubei Provincial No. 2 Middle School (Hanyang Engineering Branch School and Junior High School Department) was transformed into Hubei Provincial No. 3 Middle School.
In 1935, Hubei Provincial No.3 Middle School (the former part of Hubei Advanced Engineering Middle School) was renamed as Hubei Provincial Hanyang Advanced Industrial Vocational School.
In 1949, Hanyang Senior Industrial Vocational School, Hubei Senior Commercial School and Hubei Women's Vocational School established Hubei Senior Vocational School.
In 1949, Hubei Senior Vocational School (part of the former Hanyang Senior Industrial Vocational School) was transformed into Wuchang Senior Industrial School.
In 1952, the national colleges and departments were adjusted, and Wuchang Advanced Industrial School was divided into five. After going through the stages of Central South School of Architecture and Engineering, Wuchang School of Architecture and Engineering of the Ministry of Architecture and Engineering of the Central People's Government, and Wuhan College of Architecture and Engineering, the part of Civil Architecture Department established Wuhan Urban Construction College in 1960, which was the only urban construction college in China at that time.[21-22]
In 1961, the teachers and students of the water supply and drainage specialty of the Central South Water Supply and Drainage Design Institute Junior College were merged.
In 1964, it was renamed Wuhan Construction Engineering School of the Ministry of Construction Engineering.[17]
In 1971, Hubei Institute of Architecture and Technology was merged with the former Beijing Institute of Architecture and Engineering under the Ministry of Construction.
In 1981, the State Council approved the restoration and reconstruction of Wuhan Institute of Urban Construction.
In 1997, the Ministry of Construction and Wuhan jointly built the school.
Consolidated development
On May 26, 2000, the former Tongji Medical University, Wuhan City Construction College and Huazhong University of Science and Technology merged to form Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
