Founded in 1955, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, formerly known as Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, is the first post and telecommunications institution of higher learning in the People's Republic of China under the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. In 1960, it was identified as a national key university by the State Council. In 1993, it was renamed "Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications". In 2000, it was included in the list of universities directly under the Ministry of Education.

In 1955, the Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications was established on the basis of the two majors of Telegraph Communication and Radio Communication Broadcasting of the Department of Telecommunications of Tianjin University and the Telegraph Communication of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Chongqing University. It became the first post and telecommunications institution of higher learning in the People's Republic of China and was subordinate to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China.

Scientific research achievements
