In 1955, the Beijing Institute of Posts and Telecommunications was established on the basis of the two majors of Telegraph Communication and Radio Communication Broadcasting of the Department of Telecommunications of Tianjin University and the Telegraph Communication of the Department of Electrical Engineering of Chongqing University. It became the first post and telecommunications institution of higher learning in the People's Republic of China and was subordinate to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China.

In January 2020, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications held the founding ceremony of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence.In May, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications cooperated with Huawei Technology Co., Ltd. to establish the "Beijing Post Huawei Institute".[14-15]On the morning of November 27, the School of Emergency Management of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications was inaugurated in Xitucheng Campus.[16]
In June 2021, Queen Mary College of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, a non independent legal person Chinese foreign cooperative school jointly established by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and Queen Mary University of London, UK, was officially approved by the Ministry of Education.[48]
In December 2022, Professor Wang Changfeng of the School of Economics and Management of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications applied for the Research on Dynamic Risk Monitoring and Early Warning of Major Projects along the "Belt and Road", and Professor He Ying applied for the Research on Digital Change Promoting the High Quality Development of Small and Medium sized Enterprises, which were successfully approved as major projects of the National Social Science Fund in 2022.[56]

It mainly publishes innovative academic papers and research reports in basic research, applied science, and engineering technology in the information field, as well as a summary of the development of frontier disciplines.Since 1999, it has been included by American Engineering Information Corporation (EI), which is the core journal of EI. It has also been included by many retrieval systems and databases such as British Scientific Abstracts, Russian Abstract Journal, and American Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.
《Journal of Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (Social Science Edition)》:It is a comprehensive academic journal of social sciences sponsored by Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications and in charge of the Ministry of Education. Its main columns include: network culture, e-commerce, Internet governance and law, communication management, education research, economy and philosophy, etc.The bimonthly journal, founded in 1999, is the core journal of Chinese Journal of Humanities and Sciences, and is included in Chinese academic journals (CD version).In 2002, in the second national evaluation activity of social science journals of colleges and universities held by the Chinese Society of Humanities and Social Sciences Journals, it was rated as a journal of social science with quality progress.[35]

By November 2023, the total collection of the school library is nearly 6.184 million books (pieces), including 2.332 million paper books and 3.852 million electronic books (equivalent).The university has purchased and self built more than 200 Chinese and foreign language electronic document databases.
