Science and technology terms are an important carrier of cross Strait scientific, educational and cultural exchanges.By 2020, the two sides of the Taiwan Straits have been separated for nearly 70 years, which is the period of great development of modern science and technology, and new terms emerge in endlessly.All walks of life on both sides of the Taiwan Straits have similar experiences and profound understanding of the language barriers caused by the differences in terminology. The exchange of scientific and technological terms has become the common voice of experts and scholars on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.Over the past 20 years, the work of cross-strait scientific and technological terms has made remarkable achievements, and nearly 30 interdisciplinary "cross-strait noun control books" have been published.[1]
Preparation process
In July 2009, with the theme of "promoting and deepening cross Strait cultural and educational exchanges and cooperation"The 5th Cross Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural ForumIt was held in Changsha to advocate cross-strait folk cooperation in compiling Chinese language reference books.
In July 2010, the second round of talks on cross Strait co editing of Chinese language reference books decided to expand the cross Strait co editing of reference books from the field of language and writing to the field of science and technology. With the National Commission for the Examination and Approval of Science and Technology Terms and the Taiwan Institute of Education of China as the implementers, experts from both sides of the Strait were organized to jointly compile the Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology.
In March 2011, experts from both sides of the Straits jointly proposed the overall plan for compiling and publishing the Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology.
In December 2013, the Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology was officially included in the 2013-2025 National Dictionary Compilation and Publication Plan.
In June 2016, the Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology was awardedNational Publishing FundProject support.[2]
Preparation
The Editorial Committee of the Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology was established, with Academician Bai Chunli as the chief editor and Academician Lu Yongxiang as the honorary chief editor.At the same time, a dictionary project department is set up to be responsible for the daily organization of compilation.More than 500 experts and scholars from various fields have participated in the compilation and validation of the dictionary.
During the compilation of the dictionary, the editorial experts worked hard, persevered and made silent contributions with a serious and scientific attitude.The Taiwan Institute of Education and some experts and scholars from various disciplines in Taiwan, China, participated in the cataloguing, especially carefully read the names of Taiwan and English.[2]
All volumes were published by the Commercial Press in June 2019.[1]

The Chinese Dictionary of Science and Technology is compiled by the National Science and Technology Terminology Examination and Approval Committee according to the scientific and technological terms published or collected by examination and approval, with reference to the terminology database published in Taiwan, China.A total of 96 disciplines and about 500000 scientific and technological terms were included;Realize the function of comparing Chinese mainland names with Taiwan names, Chinese names with English names.The book is divided into 10 volumes according to the subject field and subject characteristics, including the volume of mathematics, physics and chemistry, the volume of geosciences, the volume of biology, the volume of engineering technology (first, middle and second), the volume of agriculture, the volume of medicine, the volume of social sciences, and the volume of humanities.[1]

The National Science and Technology Terminology Examination and Approval Committee (formerly known as the National Natural Science Terminology Examination and Approval Committee, or the National Science and Technology Nomenclature Committee for short) was established in 1985 with the approval of the State Council. It is an authoritative organization authorized by the State Council to examine, approve and publish scientific and technological terms on behalf of China.The task of the National Commission for the Examination and Approval of Scientific and Technological Terms is to formulate guidelines, policies, principles and plans for the work of scientific and technological terms in China;To be responsible for organizing the validation, publication, coordination, promotion and application of terms in various disciplines of science and technology;To carry out exchanges, coordination and unification of scientific and technological terms across the Taiwan Straits and in Chinese speaking areas;Organize and carry out the discipline construction of Chinese terminology and academic exchanges of terminology at home and abroad.[3]
Bai Chunli was born in Dandong, Liaoning Province in September 1953.Graduated in 1978Peking UniversityIn 1981 and 1985Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of SciencesObtained master's and doctor's degrees.In 1997, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.Chemists and nanotechnology experts have successively engaged in the research on the structure and physical properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray diffraction of organic compound crystal structure, molecular mechanics and EXAFS of conductive polymers, successfully developed the scanning probe microscope (SPM) series, and carried out systematic work on nanostructures and molecular nanotechnology.[18]
