Northeast Normal University was founded in 1946, formerly known as Northeast University Northeast China The first comprehensive university established. In April 1950, according to the needs of the development of national education, the school changed its name to Northeast Normal University, under the Ministry of Education, and became a normal university of higher learning with the goal of cultivating new types of middle school teachers. In February 1978, with the approval of the State Council, the school was reclassified to the leadership of the Ministry of Education. In August 1980, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the university restored the name of "Northeast Normal University".

In November 1981, with the approval of the State Council, the university became one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree awarding units in China.^[9]

In 1996, the school was identified as the national“ 211 Project ”The first batch of key universities.

In 1999, the school successfully completed a new round of internal management system reform, and established the education law and economic law Appropriate management system and operation mechanism.

In 2000, the construction of Jingyue Campus was launched, further enhancing the school running strength and overall competitiveness of the school; In the same year, the university was approved to pilot run a graduate school, becoming one of the 53 institutions of higher learning with graduate schools in China.^[10]

As of December 31, 2022, Northeast Normal University Library The total collection of books in the reference rooms of colleges and universities is about 3.8595 million. The library is rich in ancient book resources, and its collection of ancient books is among the best in the national university libraries. There are 310000 wired ancient books, including more than 4200 kinds of rare books, more than 50000 books, more than 800 Ming edition books, dozens of banned books in the Qing Dynasty, and nearly 100 banknotes. During the period of Japanese puppet regime, the collection of local documents in the Northeast, important periodicals before liberation, and periodicals published in the Northeast Liberated Area were relatively complete. At present, 49 ancient books have been included in the "National Precious Ancient Books List", and 168 ancient books have been included in the "Jilin Province Precious Ancient Books List". Two groups of four ancient books came to Beijing to participate in the national special exhibition of ancient books. In 2018, the Library was selected as the pilot unit of the "Census and Registration Project of Continuous Publication Data in the Republic of China". There are 2.544 million kinds of electronic books, 31851 kinds of electronic journals, 212 kinds of network databases ordered, and 25 characteristic databases built by the library.^[32]

By November 2023, the university has established cooperation and exchange relations with 275 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, including the United States, Canada, Britain, Australia, South Korea, Japan, Russia, etc. The university has established 6 academic innovation and talent introduction bases, 4 Confucius Institutes, and Rutgers State University of New Jersey Rutgers Newark College of Northeast Normal University was established in cooperation, leading 12 universities in China and Mongolia to establish the "China Mongolia University Alliance". The Overseas Chinese Affairs Office, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other central ministries and commissions have set up "International Chinese Teacher Training Base", "Chinese Education Base", "Education Aid Base" and "China ASEAN Education Training Center" in our school. The Natural History Museum of Northeast Normal University was founded on May 12, 1987, formerly known as the Natural History Department of Jilin Provincial Museum. It was formerly affiliated to the Department of Culture of Jilin Province and located at No. 3, Guangfu North Road, Changchun City. On January 1, 2001, in order to make the nature museum better developed and play a greater role, the Jilin Provincial Government decided to assign the reconstruction site of Jilin Provincial Nature Museum to Northeast Normal University, and retain the brand of the provincial nature museum. On May 9, 2001, Northeast Normal University decided to set up the nature museum of Northeast Normal University, thus forming a unique one museum and two brands. It is adjacent to Jingyuetan National Forest Park. The venue covers an area of 54000 square meters, with a building area of 14700 square meters, an exhibition hall area of 6000 square meters, and a warehouse area of 3000 square meters. The new museum was officially opened to the public on May 1, 2007^[96] 。
