Summer is the season with high incidence of burns and scalds, and children are the people with high incidence of burns and scalds. The pediatrician suggested that if children are accidentally burned, there are three first aid formulas to remember.

One is to get away from the heat source. People around should quickly take measures to help children take off or cut off their clothes, remove hot porridge from their skin, pick up wires and so on, while ensuring their own safety, so as to reduce persistent thermal injury. Wang Quan, director of the emergency department of the National Children's Medical Center and Beijing Children's Hospital, cautioned against tearing off clothes, not to puncture or tear off blisters at will.

The second is cold water washing. The correct method is to immediately flush the burn wound with cold water for more than 30 minutes. Zhu Linsheng, a general surgeon at Shunyi Women and Children's Hospital of Beijing Children's Hospital, emphasized that we should never superstitiously apply soy sauce, toothpaste, etc. to avoid secondary injuries to children.

Third, timely medical treatment. Zhu Linsheng said that because the skin tissue structure of children is not fully developed, children's burns are often more serious than adults under the same heat source. Therefore, children with burns and scalds should seek medical attention in a timely manner. In principle, the nearest regular hospital should be selected for emergency treatment to avoid delaying the treatment opportunity and causing dehydration, infection, shock and death of children.

According to statistics, burns are the second leading cause of unintentional injuries among hospitalized children. Zhu Linsheng suggested that the probability of children being burned and scalded indoors was significantly higher than that in the outdoor environment, and the dining room, kitchen, washroom and living room in the family were high-risk areas. About 75% of burns and scalds occur in infants aged 0 to 3 years, and 15% occur in preschool children aged 3 to 7 years. Children's guardians should pay special attention to the management of family heat sources, do a good job of relevant knowledge education for preschool children, learn to correctly handle children's burn accidents, and avoid secondary injuries.
