Don't fall into three misunderstandings of calcium supplementation after child fracture

"If you break a bone, you should drink more bone soup." At the beginning of August, Ms. Wang's child in Chongqing accidentally broke into a bone fracture. She buys several kilograms of bones every day to make soup for her child. But the hospital doctor told her that the bone soup she had worked hard for several hours had only a small packet of milk.

On this hot summer day, doctors from Children's Hospital affiliated to Chongqing Medical University held a nutrition knowledge lecture for parents of children in orthopedic ward, telling parents about various misconceptions and correct ways of children's calcium supplementation, so that children can make scientific progress.

   Myth 1: If a bone is broken, you should eat more bone soup. The more the better

Last week, Ms. Wang's 7-year-old son in Jiangbei District, Chongqing accidentally broke his leg. Like many parents, Ms. Wang will buy a few jin of bones every day to make bone soup for her son to drink in order to help her children recover and heal better.

Doctor Liu Yongfang from the Nutrition Department of Chongqing Children's Hospital said, "The bone calcium content is indeed high, but most of it is not absorbed by the human body, and the free calcium content that can be absorbed by the human body is especially low.". Liu Yongfang specially showed parents an experimental result: "We bought 5 jin of bone and boiled it for 3 hours, and finally proposed that the free calcium that can be absorbed by the human body is only equivalent to 50 mg of calcium contained in 40 ml of milk."

   Myth 2: Should milk drinks be drunk as milk?

Ms. Yuan from Yuzhong District, Chongqing told the doctor that she agreed with the view that "milk is the best source of calcium, and drinking milk every day is very beneficial to the health", and said that she would give children two bottles of milk drinks of a certain brand every day.

For example, Dr. Liu Yongfang said that not long ago, a parent reported that his child was not allergic to sour milk, but was allergic to milk, because such milk drinks were not milk. "Many of our parents treat these milk drinks with very little milk as milk for their children to eat, which is actually very nutritious," Dr. Liu cautioned.

  Myth 3: If you are injured, you should suppurate when eating bean products. You can't touch them!

A parent asked, "We have a custom that people should not eat bean products when they have wounds, or they will fester. Some places also say that people should not eat peanuts."

Doctor Liu Yongfang explained: "This does not exist. We should also eat more bean products when we are injured, because they contain more protein, which is conducive to wound healing."

Liu Yongfang said that many parents would ask what is best for bones. She said that in fact, this is also a mistake. In order to be conducive to bone growth and healing, balanced nutrition is needed, rather than deliberately eating more food. Energy is the basis for the recovery of all diseases, which mainly depends on the carbohydrate of cereals; The protein provides raw materials for creating new bones, promotes wound repair, and provides bone collagen to prevent the loss of calcium; Vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamin C, which can promote collagen synthesis, callus growth and wound healing.
