      Amazon China

      Start up Excellence

In August 1998, Jinshan Software Co., Ltd. received a capital injection of 9 million dollars from Lenovo Group, becoming the largest company in China's general software industry. At this time, the Internet boom has just started in China, and Kingsoft Software also plans to invest in opening an IT website, hoping to have a foothold in the Internet boom. Lei Jun, then the general manager of Kingsoft, contacted Gao Chunhui, the webmaster of the well-known personal website paulgao.com.cn, and planned to build a professional download website.

In February 1999, Excellence began to go online for trial operation. At that time, there were only five employees, belonging to a business department of Jinshan Software Company. At that time, the development goal of Excellence was "to be the largest and best Chinese download website". It took half a year for Excellence to rank 33rd on CNNIC's website ranking and become a well-known Chinese software download website. In August 1999, Excellence launched its offline software service series CD, Excellence Software Space, followed by Excellence Software Space II and Excellence Software Space 2000.

      Creation of online bookstore model

In 1999, the development of the Internet in mainland China was not perfect. As a website providing IT information and download services, it was difficult to get actual benefits. The monthly operating expenses of Excellence reached 200000 yuan, and there was basically no income, all of which depended on the investment of Jinshan Software. Excellence then began to reorganize and transform into a B2C e-commerce website, positioned as an "online boutique". In January 2000, Excellence was separated from Jinshan Software Company. Jinshan Software was the largest shareholder, and Lenovo Investment, affiliated to Lenovo Group, was the second largest shareholder. Lei Jun was the chairman and Gao Chunhui was the general manager. Subsequently, Excellence began to try to add online stores. In April 2000, Gao Chunhui announced that due to different ideas, he resigned as the general manager and left Excellence. Excellence then stopped the original software download service, and then stopped the provision of IT information content.

In May 2000, the revised Excellence website was officially launched, updating the logo of the website, and using the slogan of "beyond ordinary life". At this time, the main business of the website is books and audio and video products, claiming "not to be complete, but to be refined". In December 2000, Shanghai Branch was opened to strengthen the service to East China. In October 2001, the "User Boutique Club" was established to provide offline mail order services. In March 2002, an excellent express company was established to improve logistics services. Since September 2001, Excellence has announced that its website profit has been equal to its operating expenses, reaching a balance between revenue and expenditure.
