Original title: A special admission notice

With the opening of the college enrollment season, the 2023 Fudan University undergraduate admission notice has recently made a new appearance. Different from previous years, this year's admission notice takes Fudan's scientific and technological achievements "Revival" Kaihua paper as the carrier for the first time, inviting famous teachers and students to jointly write the text of the notice, which organically combines science, humanities and art.

"This is not just a simple admission notice, it carries the ancient papermaking process and Fudan's advanced technology, and interprets the spirit of 'erudite and dedicated, and close to thinking when asked'." Jin Li, president of Fudan University, introduced.

The overall design of the new notice adopts classical style, presenting the traditional cultural charm, and containing the unique humanistic atmosphere of Fudan. The text of the notice was written in elegant small script by Gao Xiang, a professor of the School of Public Health of Fudan University and the lecturer of the core course of Fudan General Education "Chinese Calligraphy Art". The president's seal signed on the text was carved by Xu Gufu, a distinguished expert of Fudan University and a bird and insect seal carver. The notice's inner page was printed by Ni Jianming, a distinguished expert of Fudan University and a printmaker of Fudan University

The text of the new admission notice is written on a piece of newly civilized paper, which condenses the profound historical tradition of the Chinese nation and the profound scientific foundation of Fudan University.

Kaihua paper was born in Kaihua County, Zhejiang Province. It is delicate, white, thin and tough, and is known as the pearl on the crown of traditional Chinese handmade paper. The process of Kaihua paper making began in the Ming Dynasty and flourished in the Qing Dynasty. Many valuable books and records in the early Qing Dynasty were written and printed on Kaihua paper. After the middle of the Qing Dynasty, due to frequent wars, "the paper trough was ruined, and the craftsmen were exiled". In addition, the core raw material Wickham gradually dried up, and the craft was lost.

At the end of 2017, through the joint exploration of polymer materials, chemistry, biology, classical literature, culture and museum and other disciplines, the scientific research team of Fudan University successfully "revived" the long lost Kaihua paper process. The newly revived civilized paper is light, thin, flexible and white as jade. Its physical and chemical indicators are close to the level of ancient paper. The paper can be preserved for more than a thousand years. It is not only suitable for ancient book restoration, calligraphy and painting creation, but also for printing.

"In the future, we will make every effort to promote Kaihua Paper to become a representative of Chinese traditional paper in the fields of calligraphy and painting creation, ancient book restoration, block printing, etc., so that Kaihua Paper can stand the test of the world and go to the forefront of the world." said Yang Guanghui, executive vice president of the Chinese Ancient Book Protection Research Institute of Fudan University.
