Software Introduction

MFiX is an open source software developed by the U.S. Department of Energy to simulate the multiphase flow of particle fluid. The CFD part uses the SIMPLE algorithm, while the particle part contains TFM, MPPIC, DEM and other models, and can simulate the mass and heat transfer between continuous and discrete phases.

MFiX is developed based on fortran language, and its core features include: parallel, open source, cross platform, one button installation, user graphical interface, and support for TFM/DEM/PIC models.

  • Cross platform: the software supports Windows Linux macOS, so that users can not only learn and test examples under Windows, but also directly calculate on supercomputing platform
  • One click installation: this open source software can be installed through anaconda's convenient one click installation, which solves the pain point of large-scale open source software that is difficult to compile and install
  • User graphical interface: the software supports user graphical interface, which can easily set calculation parameters and monitor calculation results.
  • Cutcell grid: the software uses cutcell grid to process complex structures, and can build simulation calculation areas through stl files or the software's built-in geometry generator.
  • Physical property database: the software has its own physical property database to facilitate the calculation of heat transfer and chemical reaction
  • Stiff Chem Solver: The characteristic time of chemical reactions such as combustion is far less than the characteristic time of flow. The chemical reaction and fluid flow can be solved step by step through the stiff chemical solver. This software can easily simulate multiphase reaction flow
  • The software comes with several demonstration examples to learn curve smoothing
  • Rich models: fluid solver using SIMPLE algorithm, dual fluid TFM solver, discrete element method DEM particle simulation, CFD-DEM simulation, MP-PIC simulation
  • MPI multi machine parallel, convenient for large-scale computing on supercomputing platform
