New NAS transformation plan (based on the old Vulcan D1581 AIO platform)

When my finger was cut again, I suddenly thought it out: it's better to change the big case of TM, why don't you find yourself unhappy.

Antecedent

The AIO (All In One) platform before this blog was built based on Vulcan D1581+Toplon 8-bay chassis, which took more than half a year. For details, see:

At the initial stage, this industrial control cabinet was selected for the sake of volume. After all, "NAS must be like NAS".

After half a year of use, it is found that the chassis has few advantages worth discussing except "like a NAS", but many disadvantages, such as:

  • The upper CPU is completely closed, and the shell opening affects the lower hard disk air duct
  • The lower air duct is well designed, provided that the fan speed is increased; Want to be quiet, temperature 50+
  • The resonance is serious, four HC530s, and the magnetic head with the case is fried with beans
  • Pursue mini, small operation space during disassembly and assembly, easy to be stabbed by the hard disk compartment backplane

I can't figure out how much I spent: the fan changed from a broken fan worth more than ten yuan to a cat fan all the way; Two or three kilograms of sponge damping strips and rubber strips have been added; The hot melt adhesive has stuck all kinds of things that should not move... However, the problem of noise and temperature has not been solved.

In another disassembly and adjustment, my finger was scratched again, and then I suddenly thought out: this industrial control cabinet is small in size, but it does not save much area, why not replace it with a large one?

Select chassis

Now that you've figured it out, go ahead.

There are only a few cases that support 8 hard disks in a small size. The most popular comment on Taobao is the modified version of the invasion case. The modified 8-disk case+damping hard disk rack totals 399:

This price is not too expensive. I ordered one, and it will be installed after the chassis is available.

install equipment

CPU radiator

The main board of Vulcan D-1581 has few CPU radiators to choose from. Due to the air duct, I use the snap in radiator sent by Vulcan+9cm cat fan as the CPU heat dissipation:

Unexpected problem: poor workmanship

When I was about to install the chassis baffle, I found that the chassis baffle hole was actually a parallelogram. I don't know whether it was the metal plate that was not fixed properly or what:

I used pliers to flatten the two ends of the baffle before reluctantly installing it. This work is too absurd.

Hard disk bit fan

There are two fan positions behind the hard disk rack (favorable comments), and two 12CM fans can be installed, but I have installed two 9CM fans (NF-B9):

Of course, installing two small fans is not idle, but because the fan position of the hard disk shelf seems to have the effect of "loudspeaker". The following is the troubleshooting process.

Troubleshooting of fan noise

It is obvious that the fan at the bottom of the pressure box, which is empty and doesn't make much noise, will double its sound directly when it is placed here, which makes me very surprised.

At the beginning, I felt that it was the influence of speed, so I removed a large D to 12V cable and replaced it with a large D to 5V fan cable (connected to the left two feet):

Connect the 12CM fan to 5V. Normally, the speed should be very low, but the sound is still very loud.

So they replaced two fans of Limin, and the noise remained after the attempt.

After several disassembly and assembly tests, resonance and jitter are eliminated. Finally, it is found that the slight hum on the front of the fan will be reflected and amplified like a loudspeaker. The principle is unknown.

I had no choice but to take out the small NF-B9 fan at the bottom of the pressure box and connect it to 5V. The annoying noise disappeared, leaving only the whirring wind noise.

case fan

The chassis fan adopts owl NF-S12B, and its advantages are low speed and large air volume.

Installing the hard disk

First, remove 8 hard disks from the old machine, and each hard disk has 6 screws; After that, install the hard disk on the hard disk rack with 4 screws for each disk; In total, 80 screws have been tightened:

The installation of standard chassis is not very interesting, because the chassis does not support back wiring, and the wiring will be very messy:

In this case, line management is an almost impossible task, so it is forced to bind with straps to ensure that various lines will not move in the machine:

result

After installation and startup, except for the light breeze noise of the fan, there is almost no noise, and the temperature of the CPU and hard disk is also stable below 40 degrees:

What's more gratifying is that the hard disk rack with spring has solved the resonance problem of HC530 fried beans, and the hook download will no longer rattle; Of course, there is still a sound when reading and writing the hard disk, but that is a normal sound when the head works and resets, which can be ignored.

Special Reminder

  • The workmanship of the box is not good, so buy it carefully, or ask the shopkeeper to check it carefully before buying.
  • The shock absorption hard disk rack with spring can effectively reduce the sound of fried beans.
  • You can always trust the cat fan.
  • The fan provided by the store was useless, so I suggested throwing it away.

Buy the finished product directly, and the scratch is also someone else's hand 😀

I made a peninsula iron box F10, the one that shook after the hard disk was installed, and the salted fish was not removed for 170 yuan~

There is no backplane design for the chassis hard disk carrier, and the power supply is inadequate. At present, you only have four enterprise disks. If you replace enterprise disks later, it is easy to explode the hard disk without a backplane, so consider adding a hard disk cage design

The actual direct power connection is much better than the one quarter backplane of the cheap NAS. What really matters in the whole process is the power supply+12V (hard disk motor) rated current and+5V (hard disk circuit board), which is why you need to replace the active PFC+dual switch forward power supply.
In addition to the convenience of replacing hard disks, the garbage backplane increases impedance and consumption.

Boss, the 8087 of the d1581 can't recognize the hard disk in esxi. How can we solve this problem?
