Foreword: It is planned to learn and experience the differences, advantages and disadvantages between Linux and Windows by using Ubuntu Kylin, one of the Linux distributions, for one month. This article records the subjective feelings from the perspective of an ordinary user.

I started using the Ubuntu kylin desktop operating system on 16.05.05. Five days later, I simply recorded my feelings about this operating system.

appearance

The appearance of Ubuntu Kylin is quite beautiful. Even the native gnome has a good face.

In the gnome environment, the color matching of the environment can be integrated together, and the appearance of various applications/games will also conform to the appearance of the current desktop, basically achieving a unified style.

At the same time, the font rendering methods of gnome and Win are different. I did not study the difference between the two. But on my low resolution screen, even with the same font, gnome is more rounded and clearer than Win. There is no eye pain when you watch it for a long time, and when you read a long chapter, it is less serial than Win. This is one of the important reasons why I like Ubuntu.

Environmental Science

To be honest, the software on the Linux platform is not as rich as that on the Windows platform, and the quality of many software cannot be guaranteed (this problem also exists on the Windows platform, but it is not obvious because there are many alternative software).

For example, I need a player that supports dff. After searching for a long time, I only found a paid software and couldn't identify my sound card, so I couldn't output it. I can do it with the next foobar2000+plug-in in Win.

Some software still has the problem of stopping updating, and no other software can replace them.

However, there is no problem for ubuntu to meet its daily use. Some commonly used software, such as wps, Clementine, SMPlayer, are quite good.

operation

The current Linux distributions are quite good in terms of ease of operation. Except for a small number of special operation modes, the others are not much different from Windows.

Ubuntu is easier to install software than Windows. Two lines of commands can install the software. If the dependency relationship is not satisfied, an apt get - f install (=apt get install - f) can automatically solve the problem.

At the same time, Ubuntu also supports the software center to search for and install/deb packages. Double click to install directly through the software center.

performance

If speed can measure performance, Ubuntu will win completely. However, the two cores are different, so it is necessary to analyze the specific content.

In fact, Windows is better than Linux in some closed source drivers (such as the crossfire and seamless switching of amd dual graphics cards), so some hardware will achieve higher performance in Windows. With the upgrading of Windows, such as multi-core optimization is no longer a weak point.

However, running the game with the kernel display on the Ubuntu platform is really smoother (independent) than running the game with the kernel display on Windows10. However, running the game with the kernel display on Windows10 can't take care of its own life (the figure below has nothing to do with the game).

Speaking only of civil security, the Linux platform is relatively safe compared with Win, mainly because it is open source and completely controllable.

Controllability is relative to the Win platform. For example, important Windows updates: important Windows 10 updates can be installed compulsorily. Even if Microsoft provides the option to turn off Windows updates in the future, it still has the ability to perform mandatory installation operations, which will not be changed by adding a simple button. The content of Microsoft's installation tells users that it is a "security update", but because it is not open source, ordinary users do not know exactly what the update (or software) does to the system (including personal files and system files).

But at the national level, the security of linux and win is not very different. Only complete physical isolation can be called security. By the way, compared with other platforms, the number and quality of viruses specific to Linux can be ignored.
