The Chinese Swimming Team Welcomes the "Golden Generation" Again

On the evening of April 27, the nine day 2024 National Swimming Championships ended at the swimming pool of Shenzhen Universiade Center. From the project setting to the Paris Olympic Games three months after the schedule, system and time point of the competition are all fully aligned, the event guarantee is also operated with high quality, high requirements and high standards, and provides an operation model for the upcoming 15th National Games in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. In the actual combat training before the Olympic Games, the results of the Chinese swimming team gave us many surprises. Qin Haiyang, Zhang Yufei and other key players played steadily. Young players such as Pan Zhanle, Tang Qianting and Yang Junxuan also performed well. Veterans such as Wang Shun and Ye Shiwen made outstanding achievements, which made people feel that the Chinese swimming team has ushered in a new "golden generation".

The backbone is still unswerving

2023 is a very busy year for Qin Haiyang, the "Frog King", and Zhang Yufei, the "Butterfly Queen". As the leaders of their respective events, it is not easy for them. Spring Swimming Championships in March, National Swimming Championships in May, Fukuoka World Championships in July, Chengdu Universiade in August, Hangzhou Asian Games in September, swimming World Cup at three stops in October, and National Swimming Championships in December... The two men who practiced in competition took the gold medal in unison. Their goal is simple - to become a "multi gold king" at the Paris Olympics.

In Shenzhen, the two became truly "swimming pool superstars", and received cheers and applause from the whole audience in the stadium, while the audience outside the stadium was looking forward to receiving the signatures and group photos of idols.

Behind the high quality idol is the diligent practice day after day. When I came to Shenzhen, Qin Haiyang did not slack off.

At the Paris Olympic Games, Qin Haiyang has many competitors. Adam Pitty, the champion of the Rio and Tokyo Olympic Games, has begun to recover gradually. Not long ago, he swam 57 seconds and 94 seconds. Qin Haiyang said that his opponent's performance was within his expectation, and he looked forward to the contest at the Paris Olympic Games: "All breaststroke athletes will look forward to the contest with Adam Pitty."

Zhang Yufei, who has just won the honor of "People Who Moved China in 2023", also has a heavy burden. In addition to individual events, she also shoulders the responsibility of relay events at the Paris Olympic Games. Looking forward to Paris, Zhang Yufei told reporters that she was very looking forward to winning back the gold medal of the men's and women's 4 × 100 meter medley relay and the world record that she had missed at the Tokyo Olympic Games: "Our last Olympic Games was a silver medal, and last year's Asian Games was not much worse than the world record. As long as we give full play to what we should have, I think other teams can't swim us."

Forerunners can still compete for gold and silver

In the auditorium of the swimming pool of Shenzhen Universiade Center, a swimming fan raised a very eye-catching banner, "Wang Shun, the ancient Greek god in charge of the 200 meter mix". This slogan is no exaggeration, because in Shenzhen, Wang Shun, who has reached the age of 30, can still win the gold medal in the men's 200m medley with a time of 1:55:35 among the world's top young athletes for generations. It is worth mentioning that at last year's Asian Games in Hangzhou, he became the only athlete to reach the 1:55 mark after the 2011 American famous players Phelps and Rochette with a time of 1:54. 62. Next, Wang Shun, born in 1994, will participate in his fourth Olympic Games. As he grows older, Wang Shun is bound to face more severe tests, but his goal is still clear: "I hope that when I am still in the swimming pool, I can set an example for the athletes behind me. We can show you that when Chinese swimmers are over 30 years old, they can still compete for gold and silver in the Olympic Games."

Wang Shun is also the same generation as veteran Ye Shiwen, who still sticks to the dream of fighting another Olympic Games. Ye Shiwen firmly believes that "the wind of London can blow to Paris".

Ye Shiwen told the Yangcheng Evening News: "After the 400m mixed swim, it was a big blow to myself. I had once discussed with the coach and team to withdraw from the race, but seeing so many fans come to support me made me have a firm determination to continue."

In fact, Ye Shiwen's original goal was to challenge the Olympic quota of women's 400m medley. The whole winter training cycle also focused on the 400m medley for preparation. But a month before the competition, she diagnosed hyperthyroidism, which not only made all efforts go to waste, but also overturned her preparation plan.

Although Ye Shiwen's performance in the 400m medley is not satisfactory, in the women's 200m breaststroke, Ye Shiwen defeated Tang Qianting, a rising teenager, and won the championship. Ye Shiwen can still prove with strength that age does not limit a veteran's determination to chop waves in the swimming pool. She does not forget to encourage younger generations: "I want to tell young athletes that they may encounter many twists and turns in their sports career. When you go uphill, you should expect that you will fall to the bottom one day. Since you choose this road, you must stick to it. We need to accept all the results and not be knocked down by setbacks and failures! "

After the waves, they began to play their own role

Pan Zhanle, Zhang Zhanshuo, Tang Qianting, Yang Junxuan, Wang Haoyu... These names are very popular in this competition. Among them, Pan Zhanle is the most representative. Pan Zhanle, born in 2004, shone brilliantly at the 2024 Doha World Swimming Championships. He not only won the men's 100m freestyle championship, but also broke the world record of the event. His presence gave China an unprecedented confidence in the men's 100m flying fish competition.

For Asian athletes participating in the men's 100 meter freestyle, 48 seconds seems to be a ravine that is difficult to cross. But in Shenzhen, Pan Zhanle showed his super strength. In the preliminaries, semi-finals and finals, he swam faster and better each time, and finally won the championship with a time of 46.97 seconds, which was his third time to swim within 47 seconds.

Up to now, only a few people in Asia can break the 48 second mark in the men's 100 meter freestyle event, while only 5 players in the world can swim within 47 seconds in the 100 meter freestyle event, of which only Pan Zhanle and Romanian Popovich can swim within 47 seconds for many times. Turning to the goal of the Paris Olympic Games, Pan Zhanle said: "I need to be faster than this to be competitive."

In addition to Pan Zhanle, the performance of many young swimmers in China's swimming world in this national championship is also commendable.

Tang Qianting, the same age as Pan Zhanle, broke the Asian record twice in the women's 100m breaststroke competition. She swam 1:04.68 in the semi-final and 1:04.39 in the final. When asked by a reporter whether she had a new goal for the Paris Olympic Games after breaking two Asian records, Tang Qianting was firm in her eyes: "The goal has always been there, without any change, and she mainly wants to break through herself, swim to the best results, and improve the details in training."

In the women's 100m freestyle final, Yang Junxuan won the championship with a time of 52.68 seconds, and broke the national record of 52.90 seconds set by Zhang Yufei in 2020. Young athletes have achieved their best results this year, or a new personal best in this competition.

The Chinese swimming team continues to improve the talent thickness, and the benign competition within the team makes the athletes stronger and stronger. The Chinese team has emerged more reserve forces in the Paris Olympic cycle, and the Chinese swimming team has historically participated in all seven relay events in full. Whether it is individual events or relay events, the Chinese swimming team has the hard power to compete for gold and silver. In Paris, the front and back waves of the Chinese swimming team can finally join hands to fight a long-awaited "war of affluence".
