The rise of AI is creating a new era of subversion or death, and the world is beginning to split into AI leaders and AI laggards.
There is already a clear gap between leading countries and backward countries in AI. In countries with leading AI (India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, the United States), 60% of companies are either committed to AI projects that have been launched and run or are in the pilot stage. In countries with backward AI (Spain, Australia/New Zealand, Germany, Japan), the average proportion is only 36%, while Japan is only 17%.
There is also a clear gap between AI leading and lagging industries. Most AI projects in the science and technology industry are in pilot or in operation (70%); Banking, financial services and manufacturing are also leaders in AI, with 55% and 50% of AI projects in pilot or operation respectively. The health care industry accounts for 38%, while the media and entertainment industry only accounts for 25%. Both are beginning to lag behind.
The same applies to large and small companies. 62% of companies with more than 250 employees are piloting or running AI projects, while 36% of companies with less than 250 employees are doing so. In addition, data scientists and data engineers accept AI faster than executives.
There is still hope for the laggards. Areas, industries and companies with AI backwardness can still catch up with AI leaders, but they need to act quickly. AI backward IT environment has been optimized for AI (unified data storage), which will enable faster adoption of AI, while those with isolated data environment need to overcome more obstacles.
IT cost and security are two major challenges in the era of artificial intelligence, but they will not hinder the progress of artificial intelligence. Instead, AI leaders will scale back, cut other IT operations, or reallocate costs to other business units to fund AI. Leaders will also increase investment in cloud operations (CloudOps), data security and artificial intelligence throughout 2024.
