Science and Technology Daily, Beijing, May 22 (Reporter Ma Aiping) May 22 this year is the 24th International Biodiversity Day. The reporter learned from the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping that with the continuous progress of afforestation, ecological restoration, wetland restoration and other work, the forest coverage rate in Beijing has reached 44.9%, and the urban green coverage rate has reached 49.8%; 612 species of terrestrial wild vertebrates have been found, including 519 species of birds.

Forests are the incubators of biodiversity. Changsha Haijiang, a member of the Party Leadership Group and the Deputy Bureau of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Landscaping and Greening, told reporters that the implementation of ecological projects such as the control of sandstorm sources in Beijing and Tianjin, the construction of three north protective forests, the greening of Taihang Mountain, and the healthy management of forests has made the forest coverage rate in the mountainous areas of the capital reach 67.07%, forming a stable ecological barrier.

After 10 years of efforts, two rounds of million mu afforestation projects in Beijing have been fully completed, with a total of 2.19 million mu of afforestation and greening, raising the forest coverage in the plain area from 14.85% to 31.4%, and forming a green ecological grid of networking and interconnection. In particular, during the project construction, 350 biodiversity conservation communities, 718 micro wetlands, 7009 artificial bird nests, and more than 750000 nectar plants have been built, greatly improving the habitat and migration channels of wild animals.

"At present, there are 79 nature reserves in 5 categories in Beijing, accounting for about 20% of the city area, forming a relatively complete and widely distributed nature reserve system; more than 90% of the key protected wild animals, plants and habitats have been effectively protected. At the same time, through monitoring, it is found that the number of wild populations of brown eared pheasant, black stork, mandarin duck and other national key protected animals is increasing; Thrushbrows, chestnut kites, white naped cranes, acanthopanax bifurcata, and acanthopanax have sprung up in various nature reserves, constantly updating the list of wild animals and plants in the capital. " Sha Haijiang said.

"Beijing is moving towards the 'Capital of Biodiversity'." Sha Haijiang said that today, Beijing's rare wild plants, such as Baihuashan grape, Beijing water buttercup, Cypripedium grandiflorum, Phellodendron amurense and Actinidia arguta, have been effectively protected; More than 40 ex situ protected populations of milu deer have also been established throughout the country, and the number of milu deer has expanded from 38 to more than 3000.
