In 2023, the trade volume (import and export) of agricultural products between the EU and the rest of the world will reach 410.9 billion euros, 13.5 billion euros less than that in 2022 (424.4 billion euros), down 3.2%.
The EU exported 228.6 billion euros of agricultural products, imported 182.3 billion euros, and had a trade surplus of 46.3 billion euros. Although the export volume will remain stable from 2022 to 2023, the import volume will decline significantly (- 6.8%).
From 2013 to 2023, EU agricultural trade increased by 56.2%, from 263.1 billion euros to 410.9 billion euros, equivalent to an average annual growth of 4.6%. During this period, export growth (4.7%) was faster than import growth (4.4%).
Britain and Brazil: the largest import and export partners
In terms of export partners, the UK is the main destination, accounting for 22% of EU agricultural exports (equivalent to 48.6 billion euros), followed by the United States (12%; 27.5 billion euros), China (6%; 13.5 billion euros), Switzerland (5%; 12.1 billion euros), Japan (3%; 7.2 billion euros) and Russia (3%; 6.6 billion euros).
EU imports mainly come from Brazil (9%; 16.9 billion euros), the United Kingdom (8%; 15.8 billion euros), China (7%; 13.3 billion euros), the United States (7%; 13.1 billion euros), Ukraine (5%; 9.5 billion euros) and Norway (5%; 9.2 billion euros).
