On May 20, two "joint statement notification letters" circulated on the Internet from the publishing industry triggered heated debate, pointing directly at the Jingdong 618 promotion activity.
On May 21, Wei Chao, a JD book purchasing and marketing employee, publicly responded to this matter in his circle of friends, saying: "A lot of publishers have sent me letters these two days, saying that they would boycott the book promotion activities of JD 618 with a very serious tone! I really think it is not easy for me. I just want to sell cheaper books to better benefit consumers; I just want to expand sales through small profits and quick turnover to create profits for partners; I just want to do my best to promote consumption and create value for society. "
According to the pictures circulated on the Internet, the two statements were issued by 10 publishing houses in Beijing and 46 publishing units in Shanghai represented by the Shanghai Publishing Management Association. In the letter of notification, it was mentioned that "for the 618 promotion plan proposed by your company, that is to say, all kinds of books will be included in the promotion for 8 days from May 19 to June 20 at a discount of 20%", the publishing house will not participate in the promotion, and "will not bear any rebate expenses incurred during the activity".
According to China Business News, as for the joint statement, the marketing editor of Shanghai Translation Publishing House said that the publishing industry has seen a lot of discounts in recent years, with many new books being listed at a discount of 50%, and there is almost no profit in the 618, Double 11 and other promotions. From the production side, book costs include copyright introduction, translation, editing, proofreading, printing paper, distribution costs, logistics, etc. It is difficult to reduce the cost, and promotion without profit is equivalent to taking drastic measures.
