Intel's second generation Core Ultra processor, code named Lunar Lake, will be officially released in the third quarter.

On May 20, Intel officially announced the next generation of ultra low power processor for mobile platform, code named Lunar Lake, which is simply part of the second generation of Core Ultra processor. It will form the second generation of Core Ultra family together with the high-performance desktop processor code named Arrow Lake. Intel announced some architectural features and performance improvements of Lunar Lake. The specific model naming and specification parameters have not been explained.

The first generation of Core Ultra, code named Meteor Lake, is the biggest architectural change of Intel microprocessors in the past 40 years. The groundbreaking separated module architecture has laid the foundation for innovation in the AI PC era. AI PC based on Meteor Lake has won the support of more than 100 ISVs, and there are more than 500 AI model acceleration optimizations. Intel's AI PC acceleration plan is in full swing, promoting the full implementation of AI PC applications. 2024 has become the first year of AI PC.

Now, the new Lunar Lake will bring a series of innovations and upgrades again. First, the manufacturing process will be upgraded to intel 20A (TSMC 3nm). The newly designed performance core (Lion Cove) and energy efficiency core (Skymont) will lead to significantly improved IPC, and the new low-power island will lead to lower power consumption, which will help improve the endurance of the notebook. Lunar Lake is specially designed for low power consumption and thin notebook computers, with a design power consumption of 17W.

Most importantly, the new Lunar Lake will integrate memory chips. The new MoP packaging technology is used to integrate the memory chip, with a maximum capacity of 32GB. This will lead to better power performance and smaller core and memory footprint.

For AI calculation force part, the calculation force of the new enhanced NPU will exceed 45TOPS, supporting mixed precision calculation. The computing power of the GPU upgraded to the second-generation Xe2 architecture exceeds 60TOPS. With the CPU, the total computing power of the new platform will exceed 100TOPS. This means that large models with more parameters can be run locally, and more heavily loaded AI applications can also have more room to play.

It is reported that Lunar Lake has entered the stage of wafer and chip mass production and will be officially released in the third quarter. About Arrow Lake, Intel will announce more information at the Taipei Computer Show 2024, which is expected to be officially released in the fourth quarter of this year, when AI PC will be expanded to desktop computers.
