On May 21, IT Home reported that Sonos launched the second generation Roam portable smart speaker today. Compared with the first generation product, it is mainly aimed at upgrading the user experience, with a price of $179 (Note from IT Home: currently about 1296 yuan).
Unlike the first generation products that require tedious initial settings through the Sonos App before use, Roam 2 works out of the box and can be used directly as a Bluetooth speaker without connecting to the Wi Fi network. This is very important for a portable speaker, and Sonos finally realized this.
Roam 2 also added a dedicated Bluetooth pairing button, replacing the complex design of the original product that concentrated pairing and other functions on the power key. Previously, users needed to press the power key for different times to achieve different functions, but now it is easier to understand.
However, old users may be more concerned about battery life. Unlike the Move series of replaceable batteries, the Roam series batteries are not replaceable. Many users complain that the endurance of the original Roam will gradually decline over time. The new generation Roam 2 still provides 10 hours of maximum continuous playback time, but Patrick Spence, CEO of Sonos, said that they have optimized the battery. "We have optimized the battery, and the battery life will be improved," but he did not disclose details. Spence said that the main lesson they learned from the original Roam is that users want to have more physical keys and want to use speakers immediately after purchase.
Roam 2 still supports the "sound switching" function, which can easily switch music between Roam and other Sonos speakers. Users can also connect any Bluetooth enabled device to the speaker, and then share its audio to the entire Sonos system. However, its USB-C interface is still only used for power supply, unlike Move 2, which has a line input function.
In terms of internal structure, this speaker still uses the same speaker layout as before: a tweeter and a mid bass unit, and the sound quality is not claimed to have any improvement.
Roam 2 is available in black, green, orange and white. The new logo is in the same color as the body, while the old logo is in white text. This speaker has been sold in retailers today.
