Musk said he does not support the imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles

Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that he did not support the US government's recently announced decision to impose tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles.

On Thursday local time, during the question and answer session of the VivaTech conference, Musk said: "Neither Tesla nor I have asked for these tariffs. In fact, I was surprised when they announced."

Musk said, "Tesla competes well in the Chinese market without tariff and preferential support. I agree not to impose tariffs."

Musk added that he also did not agree to provide tax incentives for electric vehicles.

"I am in favour of not imposing tariffs on electric vehicles or oil and natural gas, nor adopting incentives," Musk said

Earlier this year, Musk said that if there were no trade restrictions, China's electric vehicle companies would crush competitors in other places.

"Frankly speaking, I think that if they do not establish trade barriers, they will almost destroy most other companies in the world," Musk said at the Tesla financial report conference call in January.
