The results of the 21st National Reading Survey released at this National Reading Conference show that the comprehensive reading rate of our citizens has steadily increased year by year. The most important thing is that the fragrance of books can lead to the future, and the atmosphere of loving, reading good books and being good at reading is becoming increasingly strong.

The overall reading level of the nation has continued to improve, and the number of e-book readers has grown rapidly

The results of the 21st National Reading Survey released by the China Press and Publication Research Institute show that in 2023, the comprehensive reading rate of various media, including books, newspapers and digital publications, among adult Chinese will be 81.9%, up 0.1 percentage points from 81.8% in 2022.

With the extensive development of reading activities for all, reading is becoming the daily life style of more and more people. Compared with 2008, the comprehensive reading rate of China's adult citizens rose from 69.7% to 81.9%, an increase of 12.2 percentage points, and the number of readers increased significantly.

The national book reading has developed steadily. The data shows that in 2023, the book reading rate of China's adult citizens will reach 59.8%, up 10.5 percentage points from 49.3% in 2008. In 2023, the average number of paper books read by adult Chinese will be 4.75, 23.38 minutes per day, and 12.3% will read 10 or more paper books per year.

With the advent of the digital era, digital reading has become a new way of reading. The contact rate of digital reading methods (online reading at computer end, mobile reading, e-reader reading, tablet reading, etc.) has become the main growth point. In 2023, the digital reading contact rate of China's adult citizens will be 80.3%, an increase of 0.2 percentage points from 80.1% in 2022.

E-book reading is growing rapidly. In 2023, the average number of e-books read by adult Chinese per capita will be 3.40, higher than 3.33 in 2022 and more than four times that of 0.73 in 2010. In 2023, 9.9% of people will read 10 or more e-books every year.

Analysis shows that new digital reading methods such as listening to books and video lectures are increasingly popular. In 2023, 36.3% of adult citizens will read by listening to books, and 4.4% will read by video lectures.
