Propaganda dubbing Documentary dubbing Qiao Xin

Publicity film of domestic excellent professional documentary dubbing Sound engineer Qiao Xin. Qiao Xin, a very excellent professional documentary recorder in China, has participated in the recording of dozens of excellent documentaries at home and abroad. Related works have won many awards at home and abroad, some of which were shown on film lines and famous television stations.

How did you begin to engage in documentary recording?

I was going to be a photographer. But "went astray" and became obsessed with recording.

What's wrong? Why did you choose to be a documentary recorder instead of a film recorder?

After graduation in 2005, I worked in a post production studio in Malaysia. Three years later, I returned home in the spirit of the 2008 Olympic Games. At that time, I worked as an editor and cameraman in a foreign media company. At that time, I worked for Bloomberg TV, CNN, Al Jazeera makes films. I shot and edited a lot of news and feature films.

In 2009, I shot a US invested environmental documentary "Deep Green". At that time, the company did not have a sound engineer. After the executive producer negotiated, I was asked to be a sound engineer. At that time, all the equipment was brought back from the United States, which took half a year.

Through this period of work, I directly found my curiosity about recording. Since 2011, I have decided to concentrate on recording documentaries.

At the beginning of studying film, I also wanted to record film, but I didn't have many opportunities at first. Later, as I just said, I became a documentary recorder by accident. In fact, I also worked with the group of foreign low-cost films later, but I still feel that I prefer documentaries. The main reason is that I think documentaries are more passionate in recording.

In the early recording of the film, you may feel that this is a job that needs to maintain many relationships. Many domestic films are post production sound or ADR, so many film recorders mostly complete a reception process. The recorder of a documentary is different. Basically, all the voices you record can be used. It can also be said that the documentary refers to the voice you record.

In addition, the film team is very large, and there are many staff members. Sometimes a film that has been shot for two or three months will not have much communication with everyone. Documentary films usually have 5-10 people. After one or two months, everyone has become very good friends. I think documentary recording is more important. If the sound is not good, the picture is no longer beautiful, and it is difficult to make up for it.

What voice impressed you in the documentary you made? Can you tell us about it?

In the recording of the documentary, I think the most interesting thing is the voice of wireless clothes rubbing. All kinds of clothes rubbing are very interesting, but with the increase of experience, these voices have also been relatively reduced. A funny thing was said. Fan Lixin cooperated with him on a small film. He didn't go, but he was still a little worried about me, so he sent me a recording request. There were 2 pages of A4 paper in total. I read it all night, but I was afraid I didn't do as required, which disappointed Fan. As a result, I went to the scene to interview a pair of deaf mute sisters. I was also drunk at that time. However, I still hid the wireless for my sisters, and the microphones were all overhead, so I finished the shooting without any bias.

You have worked as many documentary recorders working with foreign countries. What's your special feeling about working with foreign teams? Qiao Xin, a domestic excellent professional documentary propaganda film dubbing and recording engineer.

Foreign teams, from directors to cameramen, respect recording and know the importance of recording. They are very dedicated and take every shot and sound of every shot seriously. Because of their rigorous work attitude and professional knowledge, every staff member knows that documentaries are different from movies, and the sound of the same period is particularly important.

In a documentary, every interview and every recording of ambient sound is probably the last chance to record. For example, when shooting the Beijing part of Planet Word, we interviewed a 103 year old man who invented Chinese Pinyin. The old man only answered all the questions once for physical reasons, and then went back to rest. There are a variety of objective conditions for documentaries that require you to treat sound carefully. When recording at the same time, every shot must be the best. It is almost impossible to make up for it, so the degree of assurance is not as simple as shooting a film.

One more thing, when interviewing the Malaysia Airlines 370 accident for Singapore TV, the families of the victims were quite excited, so there must be no mistakes, such as the situation where the battery ran out of power. In this kind of interview, if there is noise, it will become less important. Don't stop shooting because of some sound problems.

The recording of movies is very different from that of documentaries. Movies focus on stories, so when the sound is noisy, such as passing cars and planes, they have to stop. However, there are few professional actors in the documentary. Sound engineers should not only consider the sound quality, but also know what the character's state is when he tells the story. Think about the whole film. For example, if you can feel the character of a person (the subject), he may not remember once he is interrupted. If there is noise in the voice, As a documentary recorder, you should not interrupt him.

The voice is also telling a story. It doesn't mean that the sound quality is bad, so it needs to be recorded again. In general, it takes a few seconds for a car to come over, and it can be avoided later. But if the narrator is interrupted, the curve and state of the whole story will be different. As a documentary recorder, I think more about it.

How do you feel about taking part in the BBC documentary, What are the differences between documentaries produced by BBC and those produced in China?

The requirements of the foreign group are more complicated than those of the Chinese group. Both the time code and the reference sound of the two track audio are given to the camera. Because it is a documentary, it is very unlikely to play a stereotype. How to get the most convenient audio file and video connection in the later stage is very important. At present, I also use Germany's Tentaclesync octopus time code box, which is very easy to use. Compared with other brands, it is small in size, long in standby time, accurate in sending time code, and free from any bugs.

Let's talk about the creation of the Chinese voice in The Return Train

Everyone is familiar with the return train. Whether it is the early or late voice, everyone is motivated to achieve perfection. Teacher Fan Limin is also my friend. He is especially careful in sound recording. And he is also very strict in his work.

What do you think is the relationship between the sound of documentary films in the early stage and the later stage

I haven't made any big movies, so it's not easy to make a conclusion. I think the early and late stages should be at the level of timely communication. Everyone should have communication before the film starts, whether in the process of recording the scene or in the grasp of the story of the film. In fact, it should not be just the pre and post recording. It should be seen from the overall level of the film, such as sound, picture, light, etc. The most important thing is to communicate on the understanding of the story.

What do you think about the development of documentary sound in recent years, including the development of equipment

Documentary films originally had high requirements for equipment. In China, documentaries are always described as "hard ha ha" without funds. It seems that documentaries have no money or equipment, but that's not the case. Documentary equipment and the grasp of the scene are no less difficult than other forms of film, and sound equipment is relatively slow to update, which is more worthy of investment than shooting equipment.
