Introduction to Psychology

Psychology at St Andrews University is a four-year program offered by the College of Psychology and Neuroscience. In the first two years, students will have a general understanding of all aspects of contemporary psychology through a series of disciplines, and at the same time lay a good empirical foundation of psychology. The data analysis, research and classroom lectures learned in this stage will be ready for the next two years. In the third and fourth years, students have the opportunity to study a variety of more advanced subjects, including but not limited to social psychology, developmental psychology, evolutionary and comparative psychology, behavioral and cognitive neuroscience, cognitive psychology, perceptual psychology, and clinical and abnormal psychology.

The teaching methods of psychology specialty include traditional lectures, seminars, practical classes, tutorial classes and one-on-one guidance. In the first two years, the size of lectures is generally 140 to 350 people, the size of practical courses is 40 to 60 people, and the size of coaching courses is 6 to 8 people. In the last two years, the curriculum is mainly small class teaching. The number of lectures will be 70 to 120, and the number of classes will be reduced to 10 to 50.

The course scores of the first two years consist of 25% of classroom assignments and 75% of examinations. In the next two years, the scoring methods are more diversified, which may be totally dependent on classroom assignments or exams, or a mixture of the two.
