Australian Foreign Minister Penn announced on the government website on the 29th that, in order to "strengthen one of Australia's most important bilateral relations", the Australian government will establish a new institution - the National Foundation for Australia China Relations. This new institution will replace the Australia China Council, which has played a role in enhancing bilateral relations for more than 40 years, and become a new high-level platform for promoting bilateral relations. According to Payne, the current President of the Australia China Council, Warrick Smith, will serve as the first President of the National Foundation for Australia China Relations.

Payne said that the Australia China Council has played a leading role in strengthening Australia China bilateral relations for more than 40 years. The newly established National Foundation will, on this basis, increase investment and continue to expand cooperation areas. In addition to focusing on education, culture and art, it will also promote cooperation between the two sides in some areas of Australia's strengths, such as agriculture, infrastructure, health and environment, and energy.

Payne said that this measure reflects the willingness of the Australian government to develop a constructive relationship with China on the basis of mutual benefit and mutual respect.

Payne also said on the same day that Graham Fletcher would take over from Anxijie as the next Australian ambassador to China.
